Obedience assures the preservation of life. Nine hundred and thirty years have passed. Evil has overtaken the sons of Cain and fills the earth with lasciviousness and violence. God declares He will not contend forever with man. Eight generations surround Adam's deathbed. Sixth generation Jared fathered Enoch who begat Methuselah. These grandfathers plant a forest of gopher trees though they don't know why except that God put it on their hearts. Methuselah rears his son Lamech who becomes father to Noah, the only one of the tenth generation to walk perfect before the Lord and hears His word. MAKE THEE AN ARK OF GOPHER WOOD; ROOMS SHALT THOU MAKE IN THE ARK, AND SHALT PITCH IT WITHIN AND WITHOUT WITH PITCH Evil, too, heard the word of the Lord, and Lucifer and his angels war in the Heavens to destroy the earth’s inhabitants. With each child that is passed through the fire, their battle songs grow stronger, but the Lord works in mysterious ways. Noah's wife bears him three sons, Japheth, Ham, and Seth, and together all the men embark on the massive task of building the giant ark. Methuselah means 'when I die, the deluge comes', and as the vessel of their salvation nears completion, he joins the grandfathers in Paradise. One week later, the rain--which has never fallen on earth before--begins.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. an encouraging and uplifting story about the flood in the Bible By mustlovetoread Then the Deluge Comes is volume two in The Generations Series. You do not need to read these in order, but it is fun to read these along with the events in the Bible. This Biblical fiction story about the flood brings Enoch, Mehtuselah, Lamech, and Noah to life. I feel like I am there as they are getting the ark ready for the flood to come. Reading about Noah's mother, and Noah's sons and where their wives came from opened up a view of their lives and the events that led to the building of the ark. When Enoch is taken up, he visits with an ancient angel. These insights bring depth to the biblical story. Who where Noah's sons' wives? Where did they come from? What tools did they use to build the ark? While gathering pitch, preparing the ark, and getting the food ready, Caryl McAdoo's story brings God to life. He spoke to Noah, he helped them build the ark, He shut the door. While in the ark, Noah's wife thinks on Adam's remarkable job of naming all the animals. Could you imagine being there on the ark, with all the animals, knowing God was going to destroy the earth and everything in it? I felt Noah's ache knowing God had given up on any of his distant kin ever repenting. He knew the sons of Cain were still out there, but they never believed in God and were not saved.Noah's mother painted an ark before God told Noah to build it, but she didn't know what it was. Noah tells her God told me to build an ark. When his mother asked what is it, he answered, your painting. God supplies before we even know we have need. As they are building the ark, everything comes into place, all the animals are there, the food is ready. But they can't get the door shut. It is too heavy. Then the finger of God shut the door of the ark. Where will the water come from? Noah's mother got to watch the waters come up from the deep. This is my favorite part of Caryl McAdoo's books: Search the Scriptures, after the story. this part tells how the Bible backs up the fictional story. She relates scripture after scripture. It is like a mini Bible lesson. I look forward to many more books by this author. For an encouraging, uplifting, and eye-opening read, I recommend Then the Deluge Comes.I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

Deluge is the second book in The Generations Series, and if the books still to follow are as good as this one and the first one in the series are it is going to be an incredible series. The author has a way of breathing life and emotions into the characters that made me feel like I was on the sidelines watching their stories unfold. This is some of the best Biblical fiction that I have read and I look forward to the rest of the series. I was furnished with an e-copy of the book in return for an honest review.

Biblical re-storytelling that grips like contemporary fiction By Harold Wolf Stories of the "begat Biblical era" be-gets even better in Caryl McAdoo's volume two. McAdoo takes what most people remember as a childhood Sunday School lesson, the Ark story seldom sermonized, and turns it into compelling fiction with ancient Biblical characters becoming so endearing and lifelike that you forget you're reading the Old Testament era. I called book one good, thus I must raise my admiration to `great' for volume two.Readers will get enthralled with four generations of immediately family that include Father Noah (of the ark.) Lengthy genealogy is bypassed for just the particular needed parents that nurtured the way and means of providing an escape from the deluge that would one day hit Earth. Ancestry observed is primarily Noah's parents and grandparents as they set the stage by hearing God's instruction and beginning a forest of gopher trees without asking "Why?". McAdoo not only takes us through the family planning years of Pa and Grandpa (and their spouses), but offers some of the heartache and struggle that involved living in the ancient times. Noah's child rearing will bring on smiles. A wonderful way to visit; without having to live there. Expect some fun along the reading way. This author, like other Bible fictionists, fills some gaps left to the imagination when reading Genesis, but her explanations of her insertions that follow in this book after the text of the novella seem acceptable, if not downright practical. Not one of my own former Sunday School teachers ever told Noah's story up to the flood quite as well as Caryl McAdoo tells it. Well done! May we have another? If you've not read McAdoo's version of what happened to Adam and Eve's family dysfunction, I suggest you also order this series's first book:A Little Lower Than The Angels (The Generations Book 1)

15 of 16 people found the following review helpful. More romance than murdery/mystery! By Jeris Real Reviews I was excited to get this book and begin reading it. I like the title and what it could mean for a murder mystery read. "Buried Secrets"-it sounds exciting! After I started reading it, I was disappointed with enough of the book that I did not finish it through, page by page. I did love the cover-it pulled me in. I skimmed it and read the last chapter to see if it was brought to a satisfactory end. It was. My first twinge of discontent began with chapter one, after an intriguing prologue. The two central characters spent the first four chapters dancing around their attraction to each other. The author gave us their every thought as they became acquainted and sized one another up out of the corner of the eye. The buried secret is unearthed in Chapter 1, but it seemed to take forever to get to the identification of said secret, let alone solving the crime. By the end of Chapter 4, I was beyond ready for the action to begin. I like romance with mystery, but just that-mystery that has romance that happens during the mystery and is unveiled and discovered while the crime is being solved. I did appreciate that the faith of the central characters was woven into the story and that prayer to God for guidance was evident. If you lean more toward romance with a murder and mystery thrown in, you will probably like this book. It was well written from the grammar and punctuation standpoint and the sentences did flow pretty easily. All good things for ease of reading. This was my first Irene Hannon novel and I am not sure I will check out others. That remains to be seen. I was given a complimentary copy of this book from Revell, a division of Baker Publishing, in exchange for my honest review. These words are my opinion. I give Buried Secrets three stars.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Predictable but enjoyable read from Hannon By Ashley Pichea I definitely enjoyed reading Buried Secrets, but I found myself a bit jaded as I read the story. It's the same jaded sensation I get whenever I read too many books by the same author:- The storyline tends to follow a certain pattern, making the suspense less suspenseful.- The characters tend to fit the same mold - in this author's case, they are all beautiful law enforcement officers.- Something bad always happens to the female lead character near the end of the story that puts her at the edge of death while the male lead character is racing against time to rescue her before it's too late. All that aside, the characters were well-developed and likeable, the storyline had plenty of twists and turns to keep me turning pages, and I find myself looking forward to the next book in the Men of Valor series from Irene Hannon.Disclosure: I received a free copy of Buried Secrets from Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group, in exchange for my honest review.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. This is the first book in a series and Irene does a great job of introducing the main characters By simpleharvestreads Having read several of Irene Hannon’s books, I was excited to read her newest book Buried Secrets. This is the first book in a series and Irene does a great job of introducing the main characters, but also setting up secondary characters for her future books. The secondary characters provided tension and helped to give insight into the main characters, Lisa and Mac.The plotline itself was on the slow side at the beginning. It was disappointing that the killer was revealed very early in the book. Also, the romance was very typical and not very realistic. Despite these criticisms, the book did pick up towards the middle and makes the reader wonder if there will be justice.I give this book 3 out of 5 stars.Thank you to Revell Publishers for a free copy of Buried Secrets in exchange for my honest review. All opinions expressed in this review are my own and no monetary compensation was received in exchange for them.

The Creative Fight is an insightful and encouraging hands-on guidebook on how to turn our dreams and ideas into something we can be proud of. Chris Orwig astutely addresses how to bring shape to our creative vision and how to overcome the barriers that can so easily stop us in our tracks. Ultimately, this book provides us with an approachable framework by which to produce something meaningful from our creative aspirations. This isn’t kittens-and-rainbows stuff … it’s a book that has clearly been written for those of us who care about our creative legacy and are not afraid to roll up our sleeves. Every page is a breath of fresh air and every chapter is a pat on the back (or a kick in the butt); plus, it’s fun to read and the exercises are inspiring (and not at all like homework—phew!). I believe this book is a must-read for every artist, freelancer, and idea-maker.

By Michael Brochstein Excellent book that tries to help one with creativity but be aware that it is much much much more about creativity than it is specifically about photography. It may be written by a photographer and aimed at photographers but it could just as easily be aimed at artists in almost any medium/genre.

It starts off with Hannibal (although still young) already having a sense of awareness and quality of leadership. Duprie throughout the novel does take historical fictional license by altering key moments, for example altering the death of Hasdrubal the fair, or how Hannibal loses his eye. I'm okay with fictional license to make ones story unique. I do know some readers are not, that's why I mentioned these two examples. I did however knock off a star for editing though. While I'm not overly fussy about mistakes in editing. The Thunderbolt just had too many strewn throughout the book. Mainly relegated to character seven, disrupting Hannibal's famous trek through the Alps. The editing didn't take me out of the book, but it definitely was noticeable. I do commend James Duprie for writing a novel on the legendary Hannibal. I really did enjoy 'The Thunderbolt'. I'm looking forward to the second part of this series Africanus, slated for fall of 2015.

There were two things that especially intrigued me about The Thunderbolt, first of all, because it is set during The Republic and not during The Empire. Secondly, because it is from the point of view of the enemy, from the outside looking in.The Thunderbolt is the story of Hannibal, one of the very few generals to lead an army to the walls of Rome. James Duprie did an excellent job of telling this fascinating tale and shedding some light on the character of this man, who could have had one of the most profound effects on the history of western civilization. We are introduced to Hannibal, and we get to see him as a young man. Duprie does a fantastic job of developing the character, we completely understand his hatred of Rome. As a reader, I could sympathize with his frustration in dealing with the politics of Carthage, the indecision and the fear felt by the others. And finally we follow Hannibal with his great army as they pass through the Alps into Italy. It was fascinating to see Hannibal’s character develop as the story went on.It was great to read someone’s perspective on this Punic War. It was one of the major turning points in history that solidified Rome’s hold on power early on. It is hard to imagine what would have happened had Hannibal been successful.

Great settings and action filled that makes it really an entertaining read.A great story that will bring you into the world of adventure and history that I would highly recommended to everyone.

Destined to a life of servitude, Karl Kessel, a turn-of-the-century German immigrant from a Danube Swabian settlement in Surtschin, Yugoslavia receives an unexpected gift of The Ticket, to America. Grasping his dream he leaves behind his young wife, Katja and two small sons. Karl boards the KronPrinz Wilheim and sails for a country he knows nothing about, only that it promises the opportunity he covets. When he arrives in America, he becomes consumed and obsessed with the unwavering desire to be the owner of a farm-to be his own man. Over a year later, when Katja steps off a train with their sons in the wilds of sparsely settled Wyoming, she questions, ''Is this where I am to spend my life?!'' Katja soon discovers that it is not only the geography of her situation which will make her life difficult, as she gives everything her husband demands of her, but it is never enough. In her debut historical novel, the first of a trilogy, Karen Schutte spins a compelling family story woven with rich historical detail. Her nuanced and unvarnished narrative exposes the harsh realities of life in the last century and many memorable events as the Kessels made their journey of life. The Ticket is an unforgettable and touching account of a true American family, filled with ambition, promises, love, loss, and ultimately, a legacy of survival.

The Ticket: 1st in a Trilogy of an American Family Immigration Saga, by Karen L Schutte

About the Author Karen Wamhoff Schutte was born and raised in the Big Horn Basin of Wyoming on a farm homesteaded by her German-Lutheran grandparents. The oldest of four daughters, Karen attended a two-room school for the first eight years of her education, then traveled by school bus to attend high school in Greybull. She studied at the University of Wyoming for two years, married, and raised four sons.

After earning a correspondence degree from the New York School of Interior Design, she established Interiors by Karen in 1980, which she owned and operated successfully for the next twenty-five years. In 1984, Karen returned to the University of Wyoming, graduating in 1987 with a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in interior design. She then applied and was accepted into the American Society of Interior Designers as an allied member.

Karen recently made the decision to reinvent her life and pursue a longtime passion of writing. The Ticket is her first historical fiction novel. She remembers her own tender moments with Karl Kessel near the end of his life, and has dim memories of her diminutive greatgrandmother, Katja.

Karen and her husband Mike live in Fort Collins, Colorado.

There were several instances of the use of incorrect terms, "attain" for "obtain," "regiment" for "regimen," "pouring" for "poring," for example, that I found distracting. There were a few other inconsistencies that surprised me: Karl asks Katja to write him in English and she has not yet taken any English lessons, for one. I thought the author lost focus with the long chapters about Johnny--the visit by his buddy would have been enough since Johnny's memories, based no doubt on thorough research, were not something anyone else could have known. All that said, Ms. Schutte had good material with which to work, and kept my interest despite the distractions. In the end, tears smudged my glasses, so she succeeded in getting me emotionally involved. Her characterizations were definitely a strong point, including that of the Bighorn Basin landscape, a very real "character" in the story.I wish she had said more about the sugar factory and Karl's involvement in building it, about the other children, and about how she herself was descended from Karl.

At first we were disappointed because many of us wanted to read on our Kindles. It is a story of how tough life is being an immigrant and the joys of close family and life long friends. It was the true story of the author's grandparents in the early 1900's of a couple who chose to leave the comforts of all they know to come to America. Karl, the husband leaves behind his wife to make a way for her to join him. He finally ends up in Wyoming and eventually sends for his wife and their children. The story covers every conceivable emotion and what was so incredible for our group was the author joined us to tell about how she made the decision to become a writer and speak of the family we became fond of through all the pages. She has several more books in the works and I highly recommend this book to anyone.

It follows the lives of German immigrants to America and in the process teaches you what it was like to come here and make a life in the early 20th century. The role of women is key in the book. The main female character tries to balance her obligations to her family with her growing need for some measure of self respect and independence. I enjoyed the dialogue and plot tremendously. It wasn't weighed down by unnecessary scenes that do nothing to advance the story like some books I have read. Even though you don't get a lot of uplifting joy out of the book, there are a few scenes of great satisfaction for the main characters. I highly recommend this book to anyone of European descent who had ancestors come through Ellis Island, or to anyone for that matter, since most Americans can trace their past to another country. Looking forward to this author's next book!

It is seven years into the siege at Troy. Neomene, younger sister of Odysseus of Ithaca, finds herself defending the Greek camp against fever and Trojan attack. In this sequel to The Girl from Ithaca, Neomene befriends the women forced to survive alongside such warriors as Achilles, Ajax and Agamemnon. As the war drags on and heroes die, she finds romance and becomes embroiled in the fate of Achilles and the city of Troy itself. "The pace and excitement of Cherry Gregory's first book, The Girl from Ithaca, is well matched here and the revisiting of the Greek myths imaginatively worked. The climatic tension between Achilles and Agamemnon keeps the pages turning, the reader becoming totally involved in Neomene's survival." Rosalind Minett, author of Me-Time Tales and Intrusion: A Relative Invasion "This story is well told, fast moving and draws the reader into Neomene's world." Janet Holt, author of The Stranger in My Life "In this fabulous follow-up to The Girl from Ithaca, Ms Gregory weaves her Homeric tapestry again to bring us the climax of the Trojan War. Plucky heroine Neomene, younger sister of Odysseus, finds herself embroiled in the destiny of Achilles and the fate of Troy. But it's not all action, her love for Agenor is growing and provides some touching moments. The conclusion, without giving too much away, gives a whole new meaning to "My kingdom for a horse!" By Farnoosh Brock This was a fantastic sequel to The Girl from Ithaca, The Walls of Troy takes you deeper and deeper into the Trojan War and ends with the departure of the Greeks to their homelands. I'm hoping that a sequel is on the way for Odyseuss's presumably longish journey home! :) The story starts around the 7th year of the Trojan War, still through the eyes of Neomene, the sister of Odyseuss, and our little heroine. She is now more mature, grown far more than her age through the tragedies of war. She has known cold, loneliness and homesickness, love and loss, conflict and agony of seeing innocent men and women die, and friendship. I love that one of the themes in this book - which I didn't even see until I started writing this review - is the friendship that Neomene has forged with the women at the camp. Some are servants, some are former slaves caught from Troy or nearby towns that Achilles has sacked, and some are nobility now turned to slaves. Neomene is your down-to-earth royal sister who is more interested in doing the right thing than looking prim and proper and for that reason alone, we love her.The author's knowledge of the war and Greek mythology, combined with her imagination and ease of story telling, make her work such a pleasure to read. She has aroused my curiosity to learn more about this part of ancient history and that is a gift. I was never so interested in history as when I started reading historical fiction, and now I feel I know more about the Trojan war than my husband, ha ha! Seriously though, this book is exquisite, and obviously from the reviews, still a secret as it has yet to be discovered. What I wanted to know more about was the sacking of Troy when the Greeks finally got out of the Trojan Horse. I had heard that they completely destroyed Troy and while they did plenty of damage, I felt that this part of the book was less elaborate as I had hoped, but then again, that is what the author chose to show us, and perspective is everything - Neomene's point of view is what we have as she is rescued by the Greeks and escapes.I wonder sometimes what is it that makes you keep reading one book and put down another. I had several other books going before I started The Girl from Ithaca by complete accident and here I am, at the very end of the author's work on both books and hungry for a third. Perhaps, more than anything, I feel that Ms. Gregory was able to make me care about Neomene and her world and it's as simple as that. I have got to care about my characters or else, what am I doing reading this book? That's why I put down Pillars of the Earth, Outlander, Unbroken and many other "best sellers" because the main characters were bland, boring, or in some cases (I won't say which) a complete jerk! But I digress. If you care about history, Greek mythology, general ancient wisdom and characters with a sense of humor, pick up these two books. You won't regret it.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. We both really enjoyed the books By Bozemom I read it because of my 12 year old daughters interest in this genre. We both really enjoyed the books. They are entertaining, educational, and appropriate for any age.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Classic challenges By Rosalind Minett This is the second of a trilogy where the Greek myths are re-imagined through the eyes of a young girl. Staying true to the original Odyssey, the author develops the life of Odysseus' sister, Neomene, only fourteen when the trilogy begins (The Girl from Ithaca). Readers would gain the most enjoyment by reading this book first, set before and during the Trojan war.In the Walls of Troy, Neomene is now mature, although still in her late teens. Life was dangerous and taxing for even the high born as moral battles were played out. Loss of her beloved Antilochus and dangerous life in the war camps have prepared Neomene to face yet more dramas. She has to be messenger, nurse, supporter and confidante, all of which she manages with characteristic bravery and sensitivity. She deals with new dangers and challenges. The pace and excitement of Cherry Gregory’s first book are well matched here. The revisiting of the Greek myths is imaginatively worked. Old scores need to be settled. Years of war, hardship and loss have resulted over possession of one female, Helen. Now the climactic tension between Achilles and Agamemnon, and the effects of this on those surrounding Neomene, and Neomene herself, keep the pages turning. This book ends with the reader totally involved with Neomene’s survival. As for the fate of those setting out to sea at the end of the Greek alliance, Cassandra’s voice cannot be disregarded. The reader is left temporarily satisfied but eager to have the third book arriving soon.
