By Devan Huff I received a copy of this book at no charge through NetGalley in exchange for my honest reviewBecoming His Master is the first book in the Neighborly Affection Series that I have read, however it is completely understood as a standalone novel.At the beginning of Becoming His Master we meet Henry…an experienced Dom who is a frequent visitor of his friend’s BDSM club. His friend and club owner Victor wants him to take on a wounded sub that he rescued the week before from a cruel abuser posing as a Dom. Having been part of the ‘rescue’ team, Henry knows that his feelings towards Jay are not exactly neutral. But, more than anything he wants to make sure that Jay learns to play within the rules so he doesn’t get hurt again.Jay has serious confidence issues and will say yes to any demand, merely because the Dom wants him to. He has acted the submissive for far to many abusers over the last few months and Henry worries for good reason. However, his hero worship of Henry may get in the way of them developing a successful relationship.Becoming His Master moves very slowly because Jay is seriously emotionally scarred and Henry needs to teach him the rules of BDSM that he never learned or never took to heart. Henry is patient and kind but forceful when his needs to be. Jay is terrified, suffering from serious hero worship and never really comes into his own, even at the end of the book. Henry was insistent that he not enter into a real relationship with Jay unless he knew that Jay’s feelings were genuine and not clouded by past events. However, even at the end of the book I don’t think Jay quite had a firm grasp on his own wants and needs. I definitely think these two need to continue to work on their communication and relationship…both the BDSM part of it as well as their romantic relationship.I enjoyed Becoming His Master and the slow pace Henry took with Jay allowed for quite a bit of education of the reader in terms of the BDSM lifestyle. There were many tender moments, a few steamy scenes that were not overly graphic, and very realistic characters. If you enjoy BDSM but prefer it to be less hardcore than whips and chains, Becoming His Master is a good choice!

Barber and could be read as a prequel to the first three books — however I would suggest if you are going to read the entire series to read them in the order they are written because you will have a greater understanding of why telling Jay’s story was such a worthwhile journey to series fans.M.Q Barber has one of the most distinctive voices as a BDSM author I have ever experienced reading. It’s like a breath of fresh air to see someone step outside of the S&M side of things and more into the D/s world. There are so many flavors to the lifestyle and the genre seems entirely focused on the pain side and gives very little to the softer side of submission.“Your is not my kink, but your kink is okay.”The entire series can be summed up in that one small quote. Barber hit the nail on the head with this story. It perfectly takes the reader back to when Henry first met Jay and the struggles that painted their past. I normally do not enjoy reading a softer male character. Even in m/m books I like the dynamic between two alpha personalities battling it out, but Jay is such a sweet soul that it’s almost impossible not to fall head over heels for him. If he were a real person I would want to wrap him up in my arms and keep him forever to be MY good boy.“You may be assured I do so no matter what position I place youin. It sounded intriguing and as it was a prequel to the series, I snatched it up.Master Henry never gets involved with submissives. He enjoys them at the club or on certain weekends at his friend Will’s cabin, but he never collars one. A week before the story begins, he rescues a male sub whose safeword was ignored by a sadistic top. This book starts with the owner of the BDSM club he attends, asks him to take the boy on until they can get him to act safely.Jay Kness wants to submit, aches to submit. But he had a hard, fast, and cruel introduction to BDSM and doesn’t even understand what his rights are as a sub. And as he has an innate need to please, it makes saying the word “no” virtually impossible. In the world of BDSM, he’s a danger to himself. He already has a bit of a crush on Master Henry since he rescued him the week before and when Henry takes him on as a sub at the club, he’s thrilled.I loved this story – for several reasons. 1: Master Henry was a good dominant in my opinion. He put Jay’s needs above his own. His sole focus was to get his sub to protect himself. Always paying attention to Jay’s needs, he quickly realized that the play Jay had engaged in was the exact antithesis of everything he wanted. 2: Jay was the perfect newbie sub. New submissives truly don’t understand their power or the fact that it is NOT all about the dom’s wishes. Not until you find one you can trust and then give over that control, anyway. 3: The secondary characters were well written and I’d love to read a story about the owner of the club and his sub.While I won’t be reading the rest of the series as M/M/F trios aren’t my thing and that’s what the rest of the series is, I will be keeping my eye out for more MQ Barber books.The reason I gave it four stars instead of five is one thing: The ending was too abrupt. Jay was suddenly a completely different person, unlike the unsure sub we’d seen through 99% of the book.
