By Melanie Marshall A Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words Review (A Sammy Review)Rating: 5 stars out of 5 ★★★★★“You’re not getting your mythical knight in shining armor,” Parker told him softly. “You’re getting a man who’s trying very hard to be good, but has never been shown how to be. You have to stick by him and show him what’s best within him, Calyx. You have to take his darkness and make it light.”Following the events of the previous book, Starr is holed up in bad and the team is down a man. That is until the captain assigns none other than Parker to the team. But another psypath on the team, let alone a psypath that has history with Black and knows his secrets? That’s dangerous.Between the team trying to rebuild again and new threats arising from some unexpected places, Starr and Black have to find a way to balance their secrets, half-truths, love, and duty to the team, all while remaining alive. In other words, just another day in Juxtapose City.“You don’t need a city, a hiding place, to be happy. I can make you happy. I can take care of you.”It has been so long since I’ve been able to read a book in this series, and I hadn’t had the time to reread the previous ones before reading this, so I was very nervous that nothing would make sense to me, but it gradually came back to me, and within a matter of pages I was lost in the story yet again. If you’ve read the previous books (and you should read them in order), you know what a hot mess Starr and Black’s world is, not to mention their relationship that evolved from hate. Adding Parker to the team adds an uncomfortable dynamic, but the author handles it well and doesn’t have the problem go away like magic. It’s there and they have to deal with it.Unlike the previous books, this one had much more of the romance element to it. Starr and Black spend a lot of time dealing with their flaws, particularly the mean streak of jealousy that Starr has, paired with both of their doubts. And some of it is just so painful, like how Black truly thinks he’s this horrible person, and how sometimes Starr isn’t so sure either, but still manages to love him. It straddles a moral boundary that is so intriguing and wonderful. On top of it all, Tricia Owens manages to continue to bring the steam. We finally (no, but really) get some penetration, though it’s not quite what I was hoping for or expecting, but it’s a step forward. But it just goes to show that she’s been able to keep up the heat and fire without that.Black, Jake, Haney and Bee had all killed in the course of their work. But looking across the aisle first at Jake and then at Haney, who immediately gave him an encouraging thumbs up―Calyx didn’t see evil in them, or cruelty. They didn’t look haunted like Black, who carried his sins as if he was half a man without them. This book also provides some insight into Starr and Black’s pasts. We get to see a bit more of where they came from and what Black went through to get where he is now. There are still so many unanswered questions, but you have to expect that in this series and embrace them. Not for even a second was I bored. I enjoyed each word and am so happy to get some reacquainted with a favorite couple: Starr and Black. The cover art is nice in that it fits the rest of the series and is cohesive. Unfortunately, the model for Starr doesn’t quite work for me, but besides that it’s not bad.

I love the style of writing and have been pulled into every world but the story of Black and Starr is a person favorite. The story continues where the third book left off, gives a taste more into the dark past Black tries so hard to distance himself from, while giving you the emotional break down anyone reading this series has been dying for. I love the story, love the charaters, and as usual... am left dying for the next book to come out.

He already is figuring out where all the hell stems from. It can't happen fast enough for me...I just want everything to fall into place. Black has to start being truthful about everything that is happening right under his nose...Open your eyes!!!

"There is no such thing as vampires!" He'd heard it so many times, though now it elicited only a knowing chuckle. For even if his kind did not use the term, "vampire", preferring "necros", it was all bloody semantics in the end. Gothic became a necros in 1891, something that, if it wasn't actually a vampire, was damned close. He could change his form, "push" and "pull" thoughts from the minds of others, move more quickly than the eye could perceive, and he could kill more efficiently and with greater violence than anything he'd ever imagined. Upon being born into the blood, Gothic learns to use his new capabilities to indulge his violence fetish as never before. Now he can explore the limits of violent energy, delighting in it as either its instigator or its passive audience. This is the story of how Gothic became what he is, answering the questions Nightsongs raised about him, and explains just why he singled out the little boy in the kitchen, following him, tormenting him, feeding upon him, and ultimately enslaving him. This explains the human who became the monster. Then how the monster became something more.

Gothic Immortal: The Necropath Book .666: A Young Vampire's Primer on Sex, Power, Violence and the Love of Blood, by Christian Masters

From the Author Gothic Immortal is the first of the "liaisons" in The Necropath series. I have been fond of the stories or novellas that some authors have published as "linking" pieces between the novels in a series. Several authors I respect have done this, and as a fanatical reader, I love the practice. So the idea was always a desire in my mind - ever since The Necropath series began to take shape. However the concept became even more important when members of book clubs and individual readers began demanding that I share more about Gothic, one of the primary antagonists in "Nightsongs: The Necropath Book 1". I was frankly surprised, and perhaps a bit worried (!) that Goth developed any kind of following, as he's a pretty bad seed. As he breathed life and began telling me about himself, I was startled at just how frightening he could be. Yet his fans began to contact me through my website and through social media, and the demand was consistent: "We want to know his beginnings, and how did he come to be this vampiric creature?" Even more distressing: "Does he die in the end?" As if any self-respecting writer, or, let's be honest, reader/novel fanboy, would ever ruin it for the rest of the world by answering that!Gothic Immortal is a prequel, hence the book number in the series, .666, coming before Book 1. Please forgive the devilishly poor form of that joke - perhaps regrettably, I'm full of tasteless humor. The novella strives to answer the questions readers have asked since reading Nightsongs. Remember, I'm not just a writer - I'm a fanatical fiction fanboy - and I demand of the writers I read the same things you likely do. So please reach out to me and let me know how I'm doing. I respect my fellow readers more than you can imagine, and want very much to live to up to our lofty expectations. The feedback and questions I've gotten thus far have made the series better. And it has quite a way to go... So welcome! And let's begin the adventure - come with me, along The Necropath!

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. I especially liked the description of the process that Gothic underwent By Michelle Dalatowski It all fits perfectly with the rest of the series and gives us the insight that many of us were wishing for, to complete the background of the character and understand much more about how he came to be what he is.The author builds on an existing world, already full of rich imagery, and provides the details that make it even more complete. I especially liked the description of the process that Gothic underwent, from who he was, and going through the Necrosphere to become what we come to know in Book 1 of the series. The character too, had much depth and I was captivated by him in the first book, and now that I get to know where he came from and what he had to go through, makes him an even more intriguing and rich character.I have read many vampire books before, starting with Bram Stoker’s Dracula, up to the more contemporary books by Anne Rice or the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris, and I have enjoyed them all. However, in no other book of the genre that I know of has an author provided such a vivid account and detail about the process of becoming a vampire. It is mostly always understood that you get bitten and then wake up being a vampire, simple as that. So now, finally we get a proper description of the whole process, and that in itself makes this a standout read because it makes you understand the genre in a wholly new and original light.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Just amazing By Parker C Hamilton A great deal has been said about this novella already, almost more words that are in the book itself! Not really, but I’m just saying…This novella, like the ones Stephen King has written, tells a focused story, but since this is Christian Masters, it doesn’t actually FEEL like a novella. His writing is hard to describe – he has the ability to say a heck of a lot with carefully selected words. The prose is not sparse, that’s not what I mean. I mean that an author can tell you in three pages of narrative what Masters can tell you by having two characters eye one another, exchanging a tense volley of words. It’s a beautiful thing to watch, or read, as this case may be.His writing conveys a ton of information and reveals fascinating conflicts that already exist between each of the characters in Gothic Immortal, as well as in the rest of The Necropath series. This means that as a reader, I felt I walked into a very challenging conversation in progress. I could make my apologies for interrupting, but I must confess that I’m fascinated by what’s going on there. So while I might apologize for interrupting, I want them to continue! You owe it to yourself, if you enjoy supernatural thrillers, to pick this up and enjoy it. For only a dollar, you cannot go wrong, here! Trust me, though, this author is good enough that his work is worth so much more. For the enjoyment you’ll get, it’s worth full price. So pick his work up while he’s still “new”. He’s so good that won’t last and to get this enjoyment, you would need to pay a premium in the not too distant future.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Warning By Stuart Most of the reviews up here make sense to me, having read this wonderful short novel. However for every fifty or so raving reviews, there is one that just doesn’t seem to understand the book. This is not quite horror fiction, though there are some very scary scenes in it. This isn’t Stephen King, for the most part. Maybe something less scary though no less suspenseful, like The Dead Zone or Firestarter, perhaps, but this is no Pet Cemetary. The author doesn’t go for gros-out or garish horror. It is however very supernatural, featuring vampires, witches (both of which are handled in a very mature and believable manner – a la Anne Rice or Alice Hoffman) There are ghosts here, but again, the author takes pains to make them believable. I myself don’t believe in any of that, nor an afterlife, and that features prominently in this book series. Yet my disbelief didn’t prevent me from enjoying and, for the moment anyway, believing in the world Christian Masters has created.I have seen two types of complaints about these books: 1. From fundamentalist bible beaters who refuse to consider vampires or witchcraft as being real, and are offended by Masters’ use of the afterlife, The Necrosphere, and the road leading to it, the titular Necropath. Or 2. From people who are upset the author has challenged the vampire mythology created by Anne Rice. To that first group, I ask, “Why are you reading supernatural fiction in the first place? The packaging makes it very clear what this book is about, and the written description and sample do not make any effort to deceive a reader into reading something that would offend. To the second group, I ask “Why would you think that any author copy another’s mythology? The only things Masters’ necros have in common with Anne Rice’s vampires is drinking blood and being sensitive to light. But then, she hardly invented those, now didn’t she?All things considered, if you enjoy supernatural thrillers, and enjoy vampire novels and are open to the idea of magic a something real, you will probably like this book. If you like thrillers that you cannot put down, get completely enthralled by, you’ll love this series. But yes, if any of that doesn’t sound good to you, you might not want to buy this.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. good Deeds, In The End, Don't Count By Curt Groninga I continue to enjoy the Santa Rosa Saga series. The character development (and sometimes demise) rounds out the continuing stories of the various actors and ultimately explains why they do the things they do. Thus far, as in Trail of The Hanged Man, plot twist and surprise endings keeps the readers emotional attachment off balance.

26 of 27 people found the following review helpful. Goodbye, Ty and Zane! It was such a wonderful ride. By Val 4.5 stars for this book.Excellent comeback from B&C. Great ending to a beloved series, and I have to say I'll miss Ty and Zane badly.Read it if you are invested in Ty and Zane. It'll be worth it. I'm relieved because I felt (and still feel) B&C was an absolute mess full of squandered opportunities when it came to Ty and Zane's story to make room for the Nick overload we received -- not to mention other questionable things that happened in the last book. Initially, my serious dislike for book 8 colored my expectations for this one--I went in skeptically. Thankfully, I was able to relax and enjoy it. I'm happy to report that for me, B&C was the anomaly of the nine books.Crash & Burn: I'm pleased with the ending, the ensemble cast (balanced reasonably well this time), everything! This really felt more like the Cut and Run I know. I consider it redemption and worthy of the Ty and Zane I grew to love. Ticked down .5 because after the last 2 books, a lot of issues were left exposed without further resolution--book 8 ignored underlying issues left from 7, and in this book you are left to believe everything was resolved off page. Then the Sidewinder story overlap--Sidewinder series (Nick/Kelly) has become too inseparable from C/R, meaning you'll miss details if you skip a S/W book (I have not read the latest). Since this is the last C/R book, it will no longer be an issue for me. I will not be continuing with S/W.In conclusion: for the most part, if you can go in with your heart (not your head) without fussing over minutiae, Crash & Burn as a series ender is as close to perfection as possible. I'm sad to see them go. This is one of the few series where the characters will stay with me for the rest of my life. Thanks for the ride, Ty and Zane. :)

So much better than Ball and Chain By Edub82 You were likely wondering that if you're reading the reviews, as was I, so I will be basing most of my comparison on it. I was concerned that we'd be left with the same "whiskey tango foxtrot was that, and what happened to my Ty and Zane?!" feeling that B and C dumped on us, but Abigail Roux more than made up for the last mess with a great finale. Thank the baby Jesus. While there is a lot of Sidewinder in this book, they don't hijack it. It remains Ty's and Zane's story with some very important supporting characters. Yes, Nick is an integral role in this story, but not in a way that you want to smack your tablet into your forehead. The guys band together in a way that had me teary eyed. You feel the love. But again, I will stress that it did not feel like the other characters were being force fed to the reader. As for the characters themselves, that's another (dare I say most important) element I was very happy to see the author turn around. In the last book, they felt watered down, silly, and generic. Crash and Burn brings us back to what made us love these characters. They grew their balls back! They don't have to lose their edge simply because they've outgrown their love/hate limbo, and this book proves it. Ty has that scrappy, rakish quality again, and Zane is once more a badass mofo. The only difference is that they've grown in their relationship and ability to trust each other. Zane does things with knives that make me want to high five the nearest stranger. Ty fills the violence shaped void in his big, squishy heart. Chester has a "holy crap that's awesome!" moment. And Nick.. Well, I'm not angry at him for being in the book like I was the last go. Okay, I actually LIKED him in this one. Oh, and the witty banter is back! How I'd missed the sarcasm and uncomfortable jabs here. There's some very real tension and barriers they have to talk out between a few characters (namely Ty and Nick), but it gets you right in the gut. They aren't whining or being pig headed. Instead, they have to figure out how deep trust and brotherhood really run.If you can't handle a slight spoiler- as in something that happens in the first couple chapters- this is where you stop reading.I was so happy to see a couple big cliches avoided. For one, I was thoroughly expecting the impromptu wedding to go predictably array and dragged to the end of their happily ever ending. It didn't! They decided, "hey, we're doing this now come hell or high water," and they did.. Very early in the book. It was perfect for them. Invisible color palate and a stealth theme, but still heartbreakingly romantic. As for the end, I won't go into any detail, but it was satisfying without being toothache sweet. No cringing necessary. Just enough happy ending to make my heart feel a little better about leaving these guys.Overall, this ending was worthy of a great series with wonderful characters. Abi Roux has a special way with giving the reader a chance to really bond with these guys. I empathized with them in a profound way, cried with them, laughed with AND at them. I am so sad to see them go, but it was a beautiful journey that was worthy of a great, explosive (bad pun penalty!) ending. Time to go cry now.

If you're like me, you have loved and battled and felt every up and down with these men. Crash & Burn is suppose to be the final installment of the Cut & Run series. I sure won't be mad if it isn't, but if it is, it was an excellent way to go out.All the characters from every book in the Cut & Run Universe including side books and spin offs are present. Be prepared for lots of reveals. Many people are not who we thought they were. It's very secret spy ops. Also ready yourself to loose some characters. Who's good/bad/alive/dead?Crazy Chester is there filling in some laughs and of course all the other men with that dry sense of humor they have. I got emotional several times from all the deep friendships, bromances and romance. Yes, I did have tears. Some of the moments are a sad experience, some are touching and some we have been wanting for so long.Crash & Burn's action is off the charts. While reading, I kept thinking, this has got to be made into a movie. There are guns, bombs, fighting, knives, bad guys everywhere...Sex scenes don't dominate this storyline, but the ones that happen are extra steamy. I read so much that sadly sex scenes just run together sometimes, but I was undeniably all tingly while reading these.Ty & Zane are my favorite couple ever. I really hope that they have more books or parts in the spin offs. Sometimes when I think of them, I just love them so much that I feel like I can't stand it. A series like this one doesn't come along every day. Nine books in and the audience is still captivated. Any Cut & Run fan is sure to devour this book as well as anyone looking for an exciting, suspenseful, mysterious, thrilling ride with a big helping of heart."You know I'd follow you anywhere. Even if it's straight to Hell.""I need you to be my brother again.""I don't know how to be me without it.""I love you.""And I'm too stubborn to let you die without me."

The suspense is up, the plot is getting even better, and the romance is smoking hot! Taboo obviously picks up where Forbidden left off, but Lauren Hawkeye and Tawny Stokes pick right back up with playing with readers' emotions and hooking them right in.I love the further development of Seth and Allegra's relationship; I'm wicked excited to see where it goes in the last installment (there better be more of what started in part 1 .... that's all I'm saying). This e-serial is a must read from a dynamic duo who rock the romance genre. It's the perfect degree of scandalous.

Wow do these authors know how to write a story. Not only do they write amazing characters, but they also write a plot that goes beyond anything I could have imagined. I feel like I may lose my mind waiting for book 3. I have to know what happens. The ending is so intense that I seriously want to run and lock all my doors and start taking a self defense class. On a hotter note, Seth is even sexier in part 2. I know that's hard to believe, but oh my, he is all grown up and has an appetite for dominance. I seriously loved the steamy scenes and I know who will be starring in my dreams tonight. He is just so seductive and a bit naughty, the perfect combination.Great series, one I don't think I could ever get enough of. Highly recommended!

It provides you with a raw look at how each person is dealing with their emotions, balancing the needs of the others in their life and maintaining their day-to-day lives.Allegra has grown as a person but still needs answers. Seth wants to protect her and remove Theo for good. Theo is a total douche bag who will hopefully get what he deserves. The cliffhangers in the story are maddening but I’ll be there next week when Part III is released. This story is amazing!!!I received an ARC for an honest review.

Since breaking up with his high school girlfriend seventeen years ago, Kevin had no idea that he had left something precious behind with her. Now at age thirty-five, his success has brought him everything in life that he might need– all except companionship. Since his birth seventeen years ago, Andrew and his mother haven’t had a very peaceful relationship. Born into a family that couldn’t afford him, and haunted him with threats of violence, he hoped and wished for a better life– a life with the father he had never met. After years of bickering and bitterness, Andrew’s mother takes him not only to meet, but live with his long, lost parent. What Andrew expects is a cold shoulder, but what he gets instead is a warm welcome. Kevin’s gentle demeanor and sweet words are all it takes for Andrew to understand the true meaning of what it is to be loved, but something else– something bright and unexpected– blossoms from their growing friendship: a very different kind of love. Never Mind the Genetics is the first book in the series Double Helix.

It was precisely what I've been looking for (consensual father/son romance with all the emotions that entails rather than a quick smutty short). If you are looking for the smutty short variety, you won't find that in this book. That's all good. Take a chance on it anyway! Another thing that I really liked was that it dealt with the real challenges a relationship like this would face without assuming that the relationship is doomed or tawdry. It has a happy ending (which is very important to me) and sequels promised, so I really hope that those end happily as well. (As an aside, I wish the author had a mailing list to help me keep track of when the next one comes out.)One big thing that detracts from this book (not enough to knock off a star point, but just in general) is the cover. I almost passed it by because of the illustrated cover that does not fit genre expectations.

I was honestly rooting for Andrew and Kevin to work out as a couple, they were just so perfectly in tune with one another and it was very touching. The love they grew into as father and son and then partners was so beautifully written.

Some Needed Drama but Some UnNeeded Scenes.....Disappointed Problem/Resolution By Vastelle Warning, a few possible Spoilers:So there's a few things I liked about this story, such as it truly being an m/m, and it being incest as it was described. I have read another m/m that later changed it's mind and decided a DNA test was false. But that's something else. The main characters are Andrew (teen) and Kevin (father), who meet for the first time after a fight with Andrew's mom lands him on Kevin's doorstep. From a reader's stand point, I would have liked to see or learn whatever happened with the relationship with Andrew's mother. I know the author claimed that she cut him out of her life but there was no true backstory to it in details that would show her 17 years of raising him just made her call it quits one day. As much of a flake or demanding mother she may have been, I just don't see how she'd never enter either of their lives again.I want to question the author's origin as well. The book is suppose to take place in New York, and I'm not claiming the author needs to be from there, but using metric system forms of measurement really stood out because I can honestly say I had no clue how dramatically far the author was trying to make something when they switched to that, because, New York....Another few things I felt could really improve upon the book was I felt the author rushed the last 20% of it. There were so many details, thoughts, little actions and just story in the first 80% that took many pages to describe, but the author I felt rushed through the problem, solution, and ending at the end. Along with that rushed, glaze over detail feeling, there also seemed to be less editing and more grammar errors compared to the rest of the book. One of the most confusing things the author would do was jump between what each character thought in the same paragraph, and jumping characters isn't the issue but doing so without a paragraph separation had me pause many times.Andrew, I liked the development and behavior he displayed as it felt compelling. Kids act impulsive, needy, and dramatic which is acting on many times. What confused me however is the book went from them meeting, claimed several weeks went by, then Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, so when we arrive in January I'm mathematically thinking they have been learning about each other since at least October....but author claims only 2 months, several times. I also feel the whole Thanksgiving scene was a waste as the author never dived deeper into the grandmother's relationship with her son or grandson, and I would have rather seen a more developed "problem-that-a-rises" if nothing about this chapter added to the story, which I felt it didn't.Kevin is suppose to be 35, which to me means he knocked up his girlfriend at the age of 16, author keeps forgetting women are pregnant for 9 months as many references are made that Kevin helped make Andrew 17 years ago...which leads me to my next question. When did Andrew turn 18? One minute at a concert he can't get in because he wont turn 18 for a couple months, and like a few chapters later with no skipped time frame described he is 18. I would find it hard to believe Kevin wouldn't have done something to celebrate that, so....I'm still not sure if he was 17 or 18 at the end.....And if Kevin is 35, which was consistent throughout the book, and as good look and good of shape as constantly said to be, why then was he always referred to as looking old? Maybe that's my age creeping up, perhaps to Andrew he can be both....Ben, oh how that character ticks me off. I don't understand where the author was going with this character. Sweet and caring in the beginning, easily angered when denied what he wants to the point of ending a friendship, then apologizes and is just as quickly forgiven after the cold shoulder directed at Andrew. I can maybe understand that drama, and Andrew being way too nice in forgiving that in a budding relationship (friends for like max 2 months here). But what I fail to understand is their next fight, the Christmas presents. I can't grasp how a band that gives signed VIP tickets to Kevin directly wouldn't have made sure that Kevin and Andrew could get in the concert. I don't understand how Ben completely jumped into being an enemy because Andrew wasn't available to go to a surprise 18+ concert to begin with. Who springs tickets on something like that in high school without making sure they are even allowed to attend? And then gets made when the last minute plans don't pan out because the other person already is going? Dude...plan better, but no....he just turns completely, 100% into a complete.......yeah......which I just don't get. AND THEN....after a brawl they become friends again? Okay, clearly I don't understand guys I guess because that quick make up and forgiveness scene of Ben putting together all the pieces of his behavior in the matter of minutes with an adrenaline rush totally made me want to join in on the punch swings.All-in-all, it was a good story, very well developed with great characters. I feel a little brushing up on Kevin into actually acting like the adult the author claims he is would make him a stronger, rounder, character but otherwise he was good. Andrew seems pretty spot on and fully developed, but I feel Kyle and Ben had some work as supporting characters, as there's many holes in their personalities (Ben maybe is bipolar?). Lastly, I feel some areas could have been removed to make space for a better detailed climax of the book. So basically, an editor and this would be golden.
