Grim and bear it. Being a grim reaper isn’t easy, but answering to family is even worse. Between argumentative souls, overbearing older brothers and everyday nonsense, Aisling Grimlock has her hands full. When a run-of-the-mill job goes awry, Aisling finds herself in a mess. The soul she was supposed to collect is still amongst the living, and the man who wanted to kill him is dead instead. Detective Griffin Taylor is returning from an undercover assignment, and the first thing he wants to do is reconnect with Aisling. Her brother Aidan is giving him fits, though, and the rest of the family isn’t making things much easier. When wraiths start showing up again, and a member of the Grimlock family is seriously hurt, it’s all hands on deck for the final showdown. The snarks and sarcasms are the key factors that make the story so entertaining. No dull moments with the Grimlocks. On the other hand, the cliffhanger has left me in awe and with a question of why. Darn! I will definitely have a book hangover after this. Here is an excerpt of Angelina's and Aisling's conversation that has made me laughed out loud while reading at work:Angelina: "I'm going to kill you." Angelina seethed, rubbing her cheek. "I'm going to have a bruise tomorrow. How am I going to explain that?"Aisling: "Tell people you read Fifty Shades of Grey and wanted to explore your inner whore." Aisling suggested, "Trust me, they'll believe you."

The hilariously dysfunctional Grimlock family is again joined by Aisling's best friend Jerry, her new boyfriend Griffin, and introducing a Griffin's sister Maya, as they once again face a set of unusual circumstances for grim reapers. The plot and characters build on information from the last book to create not only a good story but also a good series. I'm looking forward to the next installment!

My Only Reaper Series I Read By Lovemuffins Such a great follow-up to the first book!I'm a big fan of Amanda Lee's Witches and Avery Shaw series (although, admittedly, I could NOT get into her young adult series... hated the main character in that) and it looks like she's got me hooked on a new one now.Definitely read the first book before trying this one, because there's a lot of background about reapers that you need to know, as well as about Aisling's rather unique family. If you like snarky dialogue, nosy brothers, alpha male overload, and a seriously sassy heroine, then you need to check this series out. I've tried other reaper series and been turned off by the magic or the exposition, but Ms. Lee weaves the mythology and facts that you need in order to swallow your suspension of disbelief through snappy quips and lots of action to keep the reader interested. As a follow-up book, we get to go deeper into Aisling's family situation, AND we get to learn a lot more about Det. Griffin - even meeting a family member! Can I just say, I freaking love Griffin???? He's got a ton of patience, and at the same time manages to hold his own with Aisling's family, occasionally giving out the affectionate verbal abuse as fast as he gets pummeled with it. I really love that this book shows a lot of Aisling just trying to do the mundane business of her job, while being sidetracked by more wraiths, more little mysteries and more murders.I also really appreciate that a new character brings in some great insight into Aisling and the way her family works. It's easy, at times, to dismiss Aisling's behavior as childish, and there was one point when I was shaking my head and thinking WHY IS SHE SO STUPID?! I was almost disappointed at Ms. Lee, because it seemed like she was being stupid for the sake of being stupid, but then the side character brought up some really good points as she was basically psychoanalyzing Aisling and her family, and I immediately was like "Oh... okay, good points." I'm totally okay with behavior that verges on idiocy as long as there's a reasonable explanation behind it that makes the character's motivations plausible and not just a convenient plot point. Ms. Lee is RIGHT on top of it with providing that explanation.More girl fights with Angelina, more delightful nights with Jerry, more family confrontations, and a rousing game of Shark Attack (which... I am dying to get my friends drunk enough to convince them to play it with me...) and there's plenty to laugh about through the book as you wait for the mystery to be solved. The best part? No cliffhanger ending. There IS some information that comes up at the end which is like OMG and of course I can't wait to see where that information is going to lead in the next book, but it's not a frustrating / things are unexplained kind of cliff hanger ending. Which is one of the nice things about reading this series - I'm not MAD at the end of the book. I'm satisfied with the way things wrapped up but looking forward to the next book (a lot). It's the best way to feel at the end of a book - and highly unusual for a serial.

Humans are a puzzling species. On the one hand, we struggle to survive on our own in the wild, often failing to overcome even basic challenges, like obtaining food, building shelters, or avoiding predators. On the other hand, human groups have produced ingenious technologies, sophisticated languages, and complex institutions that have permitted us to successfully expand into a vast range of diverse environments. What has enabled us to dominate the globe, more than any other species, while remaining virtually helpless as lone individuals? This book shows that the secret of our success lies not in our innate intelligence, but in our collective brains--on the ability of human groups to socially interconnect and learn from one another over generations.

Drawing insights from lost European explorers, clever chimpanzees, mobile hunter-gatherers, neuroscientific findings, ancient bones, and the human genome, Joseph Henrich demonstrates how our collective brains have propelled our species' genetic evolution and shaped our biology. Our early capacities for learning from others produced many cultural innovations, such as fire, cooking, water containers, plant knowledge, and projectile weapons, which in turn drove the expansion of our brains and altered our physiology, anatomy, and psychology in crucial ways. Later on, some collective brains generated and recombined powerful concepts, such as the lever, wheel, screw, and writing, while also creating the institutions that continue to alter our motivations and perceptions. Henrich shows how our genetics and biology are inextricably interwoven with cultural evolution, and how culture-gene interactions launched our species on an extraordinary evolutionary trajectory.

Tracking clues from our ancient past to the present, The Secret of Our Success explores how the evolution of both our cultural and social natures produce a collective intelligence that explains both our species' immense success and the origins of human uniqueness.

Henrich's book is immensely ambitious, informative, and important."--Glenn Altschuler, Psychology Today"Mind-stretching. . . . Henrich's book will take you on a prodigious journey through human nature and society."--Alun Anderson, New Scientist"I thought I understood cultural evolution. But in his new book, The Secret of Our Success, Joseph Henrich schooled me. I felt like I learned more from his book than from the last dozen books I've read."--Robin Hanson, Overcoming Bias blog"Henrich posits a unique approach to understanding human behavior, not in purely evolutionary terms, but as a process of cultural evolution."--Library Journal"Human evolutionary biologist and psychologist, Joseph Henrich, a professor at both Harvard and the University of British Columbia has provided compelling insights into the ways that social, physical, scientific, agricultural, religious, and other human practices commonly termed 'culture' have honed man's skills and fostered survival strategies. . . . The contents offer a very readable and riveting story of how culture--gene interaction must be examined when assaying human intelligence."--NSTA Recommends"The Secret of Our Success is a tour-de-force and a significant advancement of social science."--Darwinian Business blog

From the Back Cover

"Social science is at the cusp of a revolution, incorporating a better understanding of how our capabilities and culture have evolved and how the interplay of social and political choices shape human experiences. Joseph Henrich has been at the forefront of this more holistic social science. In this wonderfully readable book, Henrich shows how our species is special and how our practices, beliefs, and instincts have emerged because of our cultural learning. This must-read book will be cherished and consulted for its ideas and insights." --Daron Acemoglu, coauthor of Why Nations Fail

"The cumulative, collaborative nature of human culture, far more than our individual intelligence, is what makes it--and us--special. How and when this collective brain emerged and evolved has until recently been only vaguely understood. Now Joseph Henrich brings a rich and deep rigor to the topic and tells the epic story in easy narrative style. This is a remarkable book."--Matt Ridley, author of The Rational Optimist and The Evolution of Everything

"In this accessible, authoritative book, Joseph Henrich explains why culture is essential for understanding human evolution. It is a must-read for anybody curious about why we are the way we are."--Robert Boyd, coauthor of How Humans Evolved and Not by Genes Alone

"Joseph Henrich has written a magnificent book. With verve and clarity he sets out a compelling theory of the interactions between genes and culture, and defends the theory with a remarkable range of evidence from fields as varied as history, primatology, neuroscience, and the science of sport. This book provides an enthralling account of the secret of our success." --Stephen Stich, Rutgers University

"Is the ability to acquire highly evolved culture systems like languages and technologies the secret of humans' success as a species? This book convinces us that the answer is emphatically 'yes.' Moving beyond the sterile nature-nurture debates of the past, Joseph Henrich demonstrates that culture--as much a part of our biology as our legs--is an evolutionary system that works by tinkering with our innate capacities over time."--Peter J. Richerson, University of California, Davis

"In the last decade, in the interstices between biology, anthropology, economics, and psychology, a remarkable new approach to explaining the development of human societies has emerged. It's the most important intellectual innovation on this topic since Douglass North's work on institutions in the 1970s and it will fundamentally shape research in social science in the next generation. This extraordinary book is the first comprehensive statement of this paradigm. You'll be overwhelmed by the breadth of evidence and the creativity of ideas. I was."--James Robinson, coauthor of Why Nations Fail

"With compelling chapter and verse and a very readable style, Joseph Henrich's book makes a powerful argument--in the course of the gene-culture coevolution that has made us different from other primates, culture, far from being the junior partner, has been the driving force. A terrific book that shifts the terms of the debate."-- Stephen Shennan, University College London

"A delightful and engaging expedition into and all around the many different processes of genetic and cultural evolution that have made humans such 'a puzzling primate.'"--Michael Tomasello, codirector of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology

"Henrich is one of a small group of anthropologists who has revolutionized our thinking about evolution. His new book is a highly readable introduction to how our genes and cultural variants evolved together. This nuanced work offers the most comprehensive answer I know of to the question of how we became human. It tells the story of how culture, cultural learning, and cultural evolution made us so smart."--Jonathan Haidt, author of The Righteous Mind

"The Secret of Our Success provides a valuable new perspective on major issues in human evolution and behavior. Bringing together topics from such diverse areas as economics, psychology, neuroscience, and archaeology, this book will provoke vigorous debates and will be widely read."--Alex Mesoudi, author of Cultural Evolution

About the Author Joseph Henrich is professor of human evolutionary biology at Harvard University. He also holds the Canada Research Chair in Culture, Cognition, and Coevolution at the University of British Columbia, where he is a professor in the departments of psychology and economics. He is the coauthor of Why Humans Cooperate and the coeditor of Experimenting with Social Norms.

Book of the year 2015 on evolution By jukka aakula Simple theories of humans and society are nice because they can be easily applied without such huge experience on different cultures or history. Modelling people as rational actors maximizing their utility functions quite well predicts the behaviour of peoples in markets. Such models give good guidelines to develop an efficient society based on free markets on the other hand and good basis for constructing right kind of incentives to people. E.g. taxing CO2 emissions to get people decrease their CO2 emissions. In same way the evolutionary psychology of seeing people and other animals as maximizers of their genetic fitness - or inclusive fitness - give a quite good understanding of the behaviour of humans. But the simple models do not always work that well. Anthropologists doing field work have especially seen the power of culture and the high decree of differences between human cultures. Anthropologists have seen the huge role of culture specific social norms maintained by a) punishment of norm violators on the one hand and b) the internalization of norms at early age on the second hand. Co-operation is not only about kinship and reciprocity as the evolutionary psychology claims. Or not even about Folk Theorem and Equilibrium Selection as claimed by the game theorist. This book develops the role of culture in human evolution. The story of humans is more complex than that of the universal human nature of neoclassical economy or evolutionary psychology. Culture is not anything which is just layered on top of our biological nature. Culture has an impact on genes. Cooking and stone tools for processing and hunting the food has had a huge impact on the genetic evolution of the human physiology - it had already an impact on the physiology of Homo Erectus. Most of the people already know how in some human populations, lactase persistence has recently evolved genetically as an adaptation to the consumption of nonhuman milk and dairy products beyond infancy. Culture has an impact on genes. But according to Henrich this is more of a rule than an exception.Henrich also talks about self-domestication. The culture dependent social norms and the universal human way of punishing norm violators has made us to internalize the norms of our local culture at early age.As Henrich shows humans are social learners i.e. imitators. Imitation is something which allows our culture to really build on the older knowledge. Cultural mutations happen and some of them enhance the effectiveness of the tribe. The selection happens not only between individuals based on their phenotype but also between tribes / communities based on their institutions or culture. We get cumulative cultural evolution instead of just individual learning. The Darwinian competition between individuals is enhanced by a competition between the groups who have adopted same culture and same tools and institutions. We are a different animal. But we are not only smart chimpanzees but we are really ultrasocial smart animals who have developed cultural and biological mechanisms to extend our communities to people who we do not even know personally. We have extended our brains to communal brains knowing and learning much more than we can learn as individuals. We have developed institutions which allow us to trust other people to certain extent. This is the book of year 2015 on evolution. I hope especially the people who have read the meme theory of Richard Dawkins Selfish Gene and who have thought that is the end of the story - to read this book.

Solid book on how culture affected the evolution of human DNA By Tim Tyler It is curious that we have so many books about how culture influences DNA-based evolution and so few books about the evolution of culture. Joe Henrich's book is firmly in the former category. His book is all about the origin of human nature. There are problems with studying the distant past: evidence is difficult to obtain; experiments are challenging to perform; and predictions are difficult to test. It would make sense for students of cultural evolution to look to modern cultural dynamics, which are not afflicted by these problems. In fact, Joe doesn't discuss about cultural evolution very much. He doesn't provide an introduction to the topic or attempt to explain how it works. Instead he assumes a theory of cultural evolution and goes on to use it to analyze the evolution of the DNA genes of our ancestors.Perhaps all the study of the influence of culture on DNA is a bias arising out of academic funding sources. Or maybe the researchers involved all copied each other. What risks getting lost here is the idea of culture as a largely independent system evolving along broadly Darwinian lines that operates on a different timescale to the evolution of DNA genes and proceeds largely independently from it. Ancient history is all very well, but there's also the modern world, technology, the internet and the future to think about.Anyway, it's not entirely fair to criticize a book because of its chosen subject area. In fact, the book is vastly better than most books on the topic of human genetic evolution because Joe is using a sensible theoretical framework which includes cultural evolution. If I had to describe the book in one word, I would use the term "solid".Joe argues for the importance of our collective brains, and against the significance of our individual brains. This is well-trodden territory by now, but Joe's book provides an excellent overview of this topic.Joe has spent some of his life visiting the cultures he studies, and his book has many anecdotes from them. At the start I feared that the book was too anecdote heavy. For a scientists describing evidence as 'anecdotal' is a popular way of saying it is practically worthless. Fortunately, Joe goes beyond anecdotes frequently enough for me.I was hoping to find material about the cultural brain hypothesis - which Joe publicly supported in 2012. This is the idea that was pioneered by Susan Blackmore, that culture drove the expansion of the human brain. However this idea got very little coverage in the book.I was also expecting to find some support for and advocacy of group selection. The topic is rarely mentioned in the book. Joe does start out by saying that he is going to go beyond the kin selection and reciprocity explanations for cooperation championed by Dawkins and Pinker. He then spends some time in the book attempting to establish that groups of our ancestors regularly wiped each other out - but this seems obvious and uncontroversial to me. I was expecting some kind of case to be made for group selection, but I missed it.Overall, I didn't find much to disagree with in the book. There were a few issues. For example, at one point, Joe proposes that millionaire generosity is performed so that others will copy them, and they will benefit from living in a more cooperative society. I'm pretty sure that this is mostly wrong. Virtue signaling explains such generosity. Millionaire generosity is largely performed out of reputational concerns - as proposed by Robin Dunbar in a paper titled "Showing off in humans: male generosity as a mating signal".Joe argues that cumulative cultural evolution made our species special. This seems to be a fairly common position, but it ignores the fairly substantial scientific evidence that chimpanzees also have cumulative cultural evolution. The difference between our culture and theirs is not so much that ours accumulates and theirs does not, but that their cultural accumulations run into a low complexity ceiling.I also worry about Joe over using the concept of a norm. There's more to cultural evolution than norms, and I'm concerned that constantly thinking in terms of evolving norms misses out the evolution of all the non-norms.Another suspect section was titled 'move over natural selection'. Joe writes: "since the rise of cumulative cultural evolution natural selection has lost its status as the only "dumb" process capable of creating complex adaptations". I was left wondering whether Joe though cultural adaptations formed without selection, or whether he thought that such selection was not "natural".In the end, I was left wondering about the author's position on many other points as well. Joe seems to have only covered the areas where the science was fairly settled. I would have liked to see more speculation and exploration of controversial issues. I guess then the book wouldn't have been so solid.

We are not smarter than apes, but we are better at learning from each other than them By PhantomReviewer This is a fantastic book summarizing the exciting literature exploring cumulative culture. The basic idea of the book is that what separates humans from other apes is not our intelligence, but our ability to accumulate knowledge over long periods of time. These are cultural packages, as Henrich puts it, that help us adapt more effectively than any other species. From this starting point the book explores a number of other important questions: How do we choose who do we learn from? What evolutionary mechanisms explain the evolution of our ability to learn? How is the accumulation of culture different from more traditional forms of genetic evolution? The book is also well written, and easy to read. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in understanding what makes us, and our species, special.

For a moment, Jamie held the world, even though it wasn’t his to hold…

Jamie has spent his entire life playing the good twin. Now, he’s the one standing out after signing with Guillotine Records. Two years of being on his own in California hasn’t lessened his desire for the man who made it happen. Too bad that man belongs to one of Jamie’s oldest friends.

Fate is about to hand him an unexpected chance.

After losing everything, Hawke needs a break from reality. Too many lies and heartaches have left him with nothing except nightmares he can’t escape. Seeing Jamie again reminds him of a different time—one where Jamie made him feel a spark of something pure.

Can Jamie undo the years of damage caused by his so-called friend?

In the face of everything Maddox has done to Hawke, Jamie can’t let this chance pass him by. No friendship in the world is strong enough to overlook the pain Maddox has caused. Jamie can’t think of a thing he’d rather do than pick up the pieces of Hawke’s life, but will Hawke let him?

Sometimes the most beautiful relationships spring from the most broken places.

I laughed, I cried, I rolled my eyes (seriously Maddox? WTF ugh!)I see some people are upset with the direction the author took this book, but not me. I said in my review of Book 2, I was on team Jamie. I wanted Hawke and Jamie together! And I patiently (well not really patiently) waited til midnight when the book downloaded to my kindle to see if I'd get it. Luck was on my side, or was it on Hawke's side. Because in my opinion, Jamie is the right man for Hawke. I believe that with all my heart. I am not going to defend my position on this nor am I going to bash anyone who disagrees. I just want to say I was into Maddox in the last book, I really was. I do believe he loves Hawke, in his own way. However, the dinner party scene with Hawke's family in that book was really the turning point for me. That was when I started feeling a real connection between Hawke and Jamie. A connection Hawke didn't have with Maddox. Yes, he had feelings for him but even then, I believed it was more obsession than real love. Now I see Book 4 is Joss' book. And I'm anxious for that one. But please, please tell me we're going to get more Hawke and Jamie. I have an itch and I need my fix, please Charity! There was a couple editing issues in the beginning of the book. The wrong character names used (Jamie instead of Hawke, if my memory is correct) but other than that all was well. Loved the book, love the series!*It's important to this story to read (at least) Book 2 in this series first. But you do get some Hawke/Maddox story line in Book 1 also.

I was all set to read the previous book and I have this weird habit that I've done since I was a little girl -- I read the last page or two of a book (except mysteries obviously) to make sure it has a good ending, before I read the book, so I was curious what Jamie's story was going to be, so I read the description of this book and I'm so glad I did before I became emotionally invested in Maddox and Hawke. I hate, hate, hate authors who destroy their own happy endings. If you can't come up with plots without destroying couples you'very already put together then you shouldn't but writing romance. This was author is going on my never read list and I'm frankly shocked that no one else seems to have a problem with her wasting their time reading about Maddox and Hawke only to destroy their relationship -- if she wanted Jamie and Hawke together, she should have put them together in the first place.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. I believe it's a start of a life long love story - 4,5 stars By JustMe Thank you, for giving Hawke the happiness he deserved. And in a quite inventive way, too. The reader should have read the previous book to be able fully to appreciate this one.Hawke has been in a destructive relationship with Maddox for a while. Hawke is the kind of man that makes everybody love him. He is so "clever" in giving people what they need, never demanding anything for himself. Hawke is easy to get attached to. It is probably why Maddox can never let go, even if he neither can stay faithful. Strangely enough I pity Maddox, because he had something potentially beautiful and still let it slip away when a temptation arose.Jamie got the opportunity to get out into the (rock) world thanks to Hawke. Hawke was the man he has loved for ages, but the one not his to pursue. Until Hawke came to visit. There has been a development Jaime had not known about. One that made it possible for Jamie to snatch Hawke away and bring him on Jamie's tour to Europe. Gretna Green was an important part of it (google it, if you do not know what it's about).I liked the way the author let the twins to look out for each other. Joss has done his, will Jamie help so Joss get his? I hope the author will solve it in a satisfactory manner, too.Half star off, because it was too short after all.

The Relic of the King (The Crypt Trilogy Book 1), by Bill Thompson

From the Author The Relic of the King is my sixth book and the first of The Crypt Trilogy.  I've been fascinated for years by the things that lie beneath the streets of the oldest part of London - the "City."  Anywhere you look you can see construction underway, and wherever they excavate they find things dating back to medieval times or even earlier, to the times of the Roman occupation before Jesus Christ was born. I enjoyed researching and writing this book very much.  Many people believe King Arthur was real; there are stories of the discovery of his bones in Glastonbury Abbey.  This novel poses questions about Arthur and his beautiful queen, Guinevere, who had trouble remaining faithful to her devoted king.  I hope you'll enjoy reading it!

From the Back Cover Buried beneath the streets of London are the answers to an ancient mystery

  • · A wealthy man has secrets he struggles to keep hidden
  • · A hundred men he blackmailed want his painful death
  • · A partner will stop at nothing to achieve the fame that accompanies the discovery of artifacts from ancient times
Deep below a quaint street in London a sarcophagus has been buried for a thousand years.  An astonishing set of diaries is found, revealing secrets lost for centuries.  Even the journals themselves are amazing - they were written by a monarch most believed was a fictional character.   Roberto Maas, a businessman who's not what he appears to be, searches a medieval crypt for answers. You'd expect to find bodies in a crypt, but along with the ancient ones there are modern corpses too.  Roberto must be wary - his psychotic partner has secrets of his own.   As the mystery unravels and time begins to run out, Roberto Maas races to discover the truth behind the things in the ancient crypt.

About the Author Bill Thompson's first book "The Bethlehem Scroll" was winner of the prestigious EVVY award for fiction. He's a former corporate entrepreneur who's bought, sold and operated companies worldwide.  After a long business career he's now doing what he loves best - writing archaeological mysteries.   Over the years he's explored many of the world's major archaeological discoveries. These days when he's not writing he spends much of his time at ancient Aztec and Maya sites in Mexico, Belize and Guatemala. Bill, his wife and three dogs live in Dallas, Texas. The Relic of the King is his sixth novel.

Creeps Fight Over Crypt in Downtown London By Bob Newman Ex-boy toy, assassin, bartender, polyglot, and high financier Slava Sergenko (aka Juan Carlos Sebastian and Roberto Maas) lives the high life thanks to a blackmail caper he pulled off back in Russia. But the victims are on his trail, he has to watch out. He's got plenty of dough and he likes spending it on rare, ancient treasures. At the same time, a bookshop owner in an old section of London stumbles upon a crypt in which he finds boxes of old books and a stone sarcophagus. Mum is the word; he only tells his wife and a crazy grandson who happens to be an expert on classical languages (he can even read Medieval Welsh) and British history. This dude, Edward by name, does away with his grandparents in order to be sole possessor of the secrets in the crypt, but Slava gets wind of the find. He (and Edward) believe it to be extremely momentous. The relics could be linked to the Arthurian legend, even proving that he really existed. Slava and Edward become rivals, duelling for possession and knowledge of the "relics of the king". Neither of them could be described as a Boy Scout. What happens? Well, you'll have to read the book, a fast-paced thriller, with plenty of twists, turns, and surprise events. We even go back to the late 5th century and meet Queen Guinevere, who turns out to be rather more (or less, according to your point of view) than the standard picture we had. Warning: this is the first volume of a trilogy, so you might get hooked.I admit---if you check my Amazon reviews, you will not find many thrillers or mysteries there. A couple books by Robert Parker, a couple by Harry Kemelman, that's about it. So I may not be the most expert of judges here. I met the author and volunteered to review the book. I enjoyed it and heartily recommend it to anyone who likes Bondian escapades and international hi-jinks, or who has a secret fascination for archaeology.

Chapters 2 through nine were repetitive, redundant, and mostly unnecessary. Having once made the point in chapter 2 the author continues to repeat and rephrase unnecessarily trivial details. Now that he's posited a second concept he seems to be doing the same thing again . So far this is not the story that I expected the plot that I anticipated or anything of interest to me specifically or generally . I'm gonna move on now to anyone of 10 other books that I've already lined up to read . I am leaving this warning to those of you who are as easily bored as I. if you enjoy reading interesting books go elsewhereTed

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. It COULD have been a really GOOD book. It wasn't. By Amazon Customer This was a story I REALLY wanted to like and generally I did. The author chose an interesting subject and one that should have resulted in a great story. It sometimes did, but somewhere along the way somebody obviously told him he needed to weave lots of sex into the book in order for it to sell. Fully the first 1/4 of the book is utterly irrelevant to the story. It's just sexual pandering to get it sold. Then along the way he weaves in sex. Don't get me wrong, I like a good sexy book, but this was NOT the story to put this in and it did absolutely nothing to make the story better. In the end, I didn't finish the book. THAT is something I rarely do.

You may have arrived at Emma’s books because you want to lose weight. You want to stop suffering about your body. You want to be happy. This book is about how to be free from food obsession. But more than that, it teaches you how to trust yourself and listen to your body. Because once you do that, everything — the way you eat, the size of your body, the way you relate to the world — tends to fall into place. In order for you to trust yourself and listen to your body, you will need to know who you really are. Knowing who you really are leads directly to delight at the body you actually have. Imagine that. Along the way, you will begin to see your body as an amazing mechanism that once treated with dignity and respect starts to become everything you always wanted it to be. Somedays we all need reminding that we are more than the content of our food obsessed mind. That we are more than what we eat. That we are so much more than the shape of our legs. Looking at your body from the outside in, it’s easy to notice imperfections, and then obsess over them. It’s so easy in fact to focus on what is wrong we forget to remember what is right. Get comfortable with who you actually are and you will find tremendous power to live the life you always wanted. This book interrupts the old thinking patterns about food and diet and weight and feeling terrible in your skin. It opens up a new way of seeing yourself that will allow you to love yourself, eat peacefully and have the body you always wanted. Emma has been likened to Elizabeth Gilbert and Cheryl Strayed. Designed to Heal the Real You By Amazon Customer A beautifully written and effortlessly readable account of an extraordinarily determined battle with the demon bulimia.Wright presents her story in such an open and deeply personal style that it is nigh on impossible to become thoroughly engrossed in her journey, as if it were you're own. This is not a book about bulimia however, it is a story of courage, the stuff we need to find within ourselves to heal harm done to or by us.Wright not only walks us through the nightmare of her specific illness, she shares the strategy that she formulated from many sources and presents a detailed approach to addressing virtually any issue that challenges our right to simply be the person that we truly are. This book will inspire you again and again because it is designed that way.

Emma's book is a must read. A past sufferer of bulimia herself, Emma shares with us her own toolkit to start beating this awful disease. I liked the way she gently prompts and guides the reader through practical exercises to focus on inner peace and happiness - no focus on food!. Emma provides a refreshing approach to tackling eating disorders and she is spot on. This is a book that you can refer to again and again when needing a little 'pep talk' or encouragement. While it is aimed at body image disorders, it's a perfect read for anyone as the skills Emma introduces can help us all negotiate the various curveballs of life. Looking forward to the next book in the series !!

By Amazon Customer This book captures a courageous, down to earth, generous woman's personal transformation in dealing with a much talked about, but little understood issue that destroys the lives many women and men deal with. Bulimia is a mostly hidden issue that the writer brings into the light of day, and gives a very practical, on the court access to dealing with, and actually healing in a way that she has discovered through years of her own commitment to not being stuck with who she wound up being. Her story is a demonstration of what is possible for all of us - living ones life not limited and bound by ones past. While written specifically for people who deal with eating disorders, it has live lessons that are valuable for anyone.

Obedience assures the preservation of life. Nine hundred and thirty years have passed. Evil has overtaken the sons of Cain and fills the earth with lasciviousness and violence. God declares He will not contend forever with man. Eight generations surround Adam's deathbed. Sixth generation Jared fathered Enoch who begat Methuselah. These grandfathers plant a forest of gopher trees though they don't know why except that God put it on their hearts. Methuselah rears his son Lamech who becomes father to Noah, the only one of the tenth generation to walk perfect before the Lord and hears His word. MAKE THEE AN ARK OF GOPHER WOOD; ROOMS SHALT THOU MAKE IN THE ARK, AND SHALT PITCH IT WITHIN AND WITHOUT WITH PITCH Evil, too, heard the word of the Lord, and Lucifer and his angels war in the Heavens to destroy the earth’s inhabitants. With each child that is passed through the fire, their battle songs grow stronger, but the Lord works in mysterious ways. Noah's wife bears him three sons, Japheth, Ham, and Seth, and together all the men embark on the massive task of building the giant ark. Methuselah means 'when I die, the deluge comes', and as the vessel of their salvation nears completion, he joins the grandfathers in Paradise. One week later, the rain--which has never fallen on earth before--begins.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. an encouraging and uplifting story about the flood in the Bible By mustlovetoread Then the Deluge Comes is volume two in The Generations Series. You do not need to read these in order, but it is fun to read these along with the events in the Bible. This Biblical fiction story about the flood brings Enoch, Mehtuselah, Lamech, and Noah to life. I feel like I am there as they are getting the ark ready for the flood to come. Reading about Noah's mother, and Noah's sons and where their wives came from opened up a view of their lives and the events that led to the building of the ark. When Enoch is taken up, he visits with an ancient angel. These insights bring depth to the biblical story. Who where Noah's sons' wives? Where did they come from? What tools did they use to build the ark? While gathering pitch, preparing the ark, and getting the food ready, Caryl McAdoo's story brings God to life. He spoke to Noah, he helped them build the ark, He shut the door. While in the ark, Noah's wife thinks on Adam's remarkable job of naming all the animals. Could you imagine being there on the ark, with all the animals, knowing God was going to destroy the earth and everything in it? I felt Noah's ache knowing God had given up on any of his distant kin ever repenting. He knew the sons of Cain were still out there, but they never believed in God and were not saved.Noah's mother painted an ark before God told Noah to build it, but she didn't know what it was. Noah tells her God told me to build an ark. When his mother asked what is it, he answered, your painting. God supplies before we even know we have need. As they are building the ark, everything comes into place, all the animals are there, the food is ready. But they can't get the door shut. It is too heavy. Then the finger of God shut the door of the ark. Where will the water come from? Noah's mother got to watch the waters come up from the deep. This is my favorite part of Caryl McAdoo's books: Search the Scriptures, after the story. this part tells how the Bible backs up the fictional story. She relates scripture after scripture. It is like a mini Bible lesson. I look forward to many more books by this author. For an encouraging, uplifting, and eye-opening read, I recommend Then the Deluge Comes.I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful Biblical Fiction! By AnnE. Deluge is the second book in The Generations Series, and if the books still to follow are as good as this one and the first one in the series are it is going to be an incredible series. The author has a way of breathing life and emotions into the characters that made me feel like I was on the sidelines watching their stories unfold. This is some of the best Biblical fiction that I have read and I look forward to the rest of the series. I was furnished with an e-copy of the book in return for an honest review.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Biblical re-storytelling that grips like contemporary fiction By Harold Wolf Stories of the "begat Biblical era" be-gets even better in Caryl McAdoo's volume two. McAdoo takes what most people remember as a childhood Sunday School lesson, the Ark story seldom sermonized, and turns it into compelling fiction with ancient Biblical characters becoming so endearing and lifelike that you forget you're reading the Old Testament era. I called book one good, thus I must raise my admiration to `great' for volume two.Readers will get enthralled with four generations of immediately family that include Father Noah (of the ark.) Lengthy genealogy is bypassed for just the particular needed parents that nurtured the way and means of providing an escape from the deluge that would one day hit Earth. Ancestry observed is primarily Noah's parents and grandparents as they set the stage by hearing God's instruction and beginning a forest of gopher trees without asking "Why?". McAdoo not only takes us through the family planning years of Pa and Grandpa (and their spouses), but offers some of the heartache and struggle that involved living in the ancient times. Noah's child rearing will bring on smiles. A wonderful way to visit; without having to live there. Expect some fun along the reading way. This author, like other Bible fictionists, fills some gaps left to the imagination when reading Genesis, but her explanations of her insertions that follow in this book after the text of the novella seem acceptable, if not downright practical. Not one of my own former Sunday School teachers ever told Noah's story up to the flood quite as well as Caryl McAdoo tells it. Well done! May we have another? If you've not read McAdoo's version of what happened to Adam and Eve's family dysfunction, I suggest you also order this series's first book:A Little Lower Than The Angels (The Generations Book 1)

I like the title and what it could mean for a murder mystery read. "Buried Secrets"-it sounds exciting! After I started reading it, I was disappointed with enough of the book that I did not finish it through, page by page. I did love the cover-it pulled me in. I skimmed it and read the last chapter to see if it was brought to a satisfactory end. It was. My first twinge of discontent began with chapter one, after an intriguing prologue. The two central characters spent the first four chapters dancing around their attraction to each other. The author gave us their every thought as they became acquainted and sized one another up out of the corner of the eye. The buried secret is unearthed in Chapter 1, but it seemed to take forever to get to the identification of said secret, let alone solving the crime. By the end of Chapter 4, I was beyond ready for the action to begin. I like romance with mystery, but just that-mystery that has romance that happens during the mystery and is unveiled and discovered while the crime is being solved. I did appreciate that the faith of the central characters was woven into the story and that prayer to God for guidance was evident. If you lean more toward romance with a murder and mystery thrown in, you will probably like this book. It was well written from the grammar and punctuation standpoint and the sentences did flow pretty easily. All good things for ease of reading. This was my first Irene Hannon novel and I am not sure I will check out others. That remains to be seen. I was given a complimentary copy of this book from Revell, a division of Baker Publishing, in exchange for my honest review. These words are my opinion. I give Buried Secrets three stars.

Predictable but enjoyable read from Hannon By Ashley Pichea I definitely enjoyed reading Buried Secrets, but I found myself a bit jaded as I read the story. It's the same jaded sensation I get whenever I read too many books by the same author:- The storyline tends to follow a certain pattern, making the suspense less suspenseful.- The characters tend to fit the same mold - in this author's case, they are all beautiful law enforcement officers.- Something bad always happens to the female lead character near the end of the story that puts her at the edge of death while the male lead character is racing against time to rescue her before it's too late. All that aside, the characters were well-developed and likeable, the storyline had plenty of twists and turns to keep me turning pages, and I find myself looking forward to the next book in the Men of Valor series from Irene Hannon.Disclosure: I received a free copy of Buried Secrets from Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group, in exchange for my honest review.

This is the first book in a series and Irene does a great job of introducing the main characters By simpleharvestreads Having read several of Irene Hannon’s books, I was excited to read her newest book Buried Secrets. This is the first book in a series and Irene does a great job of introducing the main characters, but also setting up secondary characters for her future books. The secondary characters provided tension and helped to give insight into the main characters, Lisa and Mac.The plotline itself was on the slow side at the beginning. It was disappointing that the killer was revealed very early in the book. Also, the romance was very typical and not very realistic. Despite these criticisms, the book did pick up towards the middle and makes the reader wonder if there will be justice.I give this book 3 out of 5 stars.Thank you to Revell Publishers for a free copy of Buried Secrets in exchange for my honest review. All opinions expressed in this review are my own and no monetary compensation was received in exchange for them.
