The Mind Illuminated: A Complete Meditation Guide Integrating Buddhist Wisdom and Brain Science, by Culadasa (John Yates) PhD, Matthew Immergut PhD, Jeremy Graves

Review “A systematic, hands-on manual, The Mind Illuminated will be a great help to anyone who wants to completely fathom the process of meditative development in all its stages. Culadasa gives us the full conceptual framework together with complete instructions for putting it into play. In largely Western language, with help from wonderful images and diagrams, this book brings the path of meditation to life.”  —Sharon Salzberg, author, Real Happiness“[Culadasa] takes me through the science of the practice straight to the adventure of sitting, and offers context through sustainable, practical applications and tools. This book is full of wisdom, story, and creativity, and I'll be glad to have it as a reference for many years to come.”  —Elena Brower, author, Art of Attention“This book is a rare and valuable treasure, providing a detailed, step-by-step account of how meditation practice progresses. Culadasa is the real deal, a living adept with decades of experience.”  —Shinzen Young, author, Beginner’s Guide to Meditation“Essential reading for anyone interested in meditative development from any tradition. At once comprehensive and also very easy to read and follow in practice, this is the most thorough, straightforward, clear, and practical guide to training the mind that I have ever found. A remarkable achievement.”  —Daniel Ingram, M.D., author, Mastering the Core Teachings of the Buddha“In a time where meditation and its twin sister, mindfulness, have become the fads du jour, Culadasa gives us the real deal in this encyclopedic handbook. If you're serious about meditation, The Mind Illuminated should be on your bookshelf.”  —Lama Marut, author, A Spiritual Renegade's Guide to the Good Life“With wisdom, clarity and grace, Culadasa has written an invaluable manual for awakening. I believe this book will become one of the "Top 10 Must Reads" for anyone on the spiritual path for years to come. Helpful for beginning meditators, and valuable for advanced meditators who are already committed to meditation but have not yet experienced the fruits of consistent practice.”  —Stephanie Nash, mindfulness coach and integrative counselorThis book does an outstanding job of both constructing a cognitive theory of how the mind works and presenting a detailed handbook for learning and mastering meditation. The result is a beautiful integration of theory and practice, whose parallel strands lead to experientially, and account for conceptually, the radical shift in consciousness we call awakening.”  —Richard P. Boyle, author, Realizing Awakened Consciousness

I have practiced meditation for at least several years in each of seven different traditions, including every major wing of Buddhism except Tibetan. "The Mind Illuminated" is the most brilliant book about meditation ever written, in any language, in any century. There is absolutely no Asian religion stuff, although crucial traditional meditation technical terms are referenced and explained when helpful. Straight up meditation, western style, everything carefully and consistently explained in psychological terms that are only a little more sophisticated than everyday English useage. It is a big book because of such detailed explanations, not because it is complex or digressive. Nice bite size chapters, beautifully organized. The choice of Bhavanakrama as the structure for his discourse is technically marvelous. Regular meditation practice is a huge life commitment of your time that you must weigh carefully, so this book is also most suitable for those thinking of beginning practice. If I had read this book forty-five years ago, I would never have bothered with ten trips to India, Nepal, and Thailand. Some years ago in retirement I considered that I was fully cooked with meditation, but with this book I am inspired to begin again, and now I am an old hermit having a blast. I have shelves of books on this topic, but this one is the best. I have practiced my way through 60% of the book, and I am still amazed at its conciseness and solutions to major technical problems identified in traditional texts, particularly the Lankavatara Sutra.Everyone until now learns meditation by going to a meditation retreat for that purpose. This is the first satisfactory book that can replace retreats for learning meditation. Not because of the 'Stage' chapters that tell you what to do in meditation, but because of the 'Interlude' chapters that explain what is happening in the mind at each stage. The explanatory line drawings are very clever and helpful. Culadasa's professional experience as a neuroscientist drives away all the mystery and mysticism usually associated with meditation, and you feel more in personal control of your experience.Few who have gone to meditation retreats repeat the experience. Most 'meditation retreats' have a serious religious and cultic agenda that is a turnoff for many. Mind control and recruitment is always an issue, as well as group hypnosis, although actively denied. I have attended 20 retreats of a week or longer.Secondly, I warn you of what the retreats do not: Progress in meditation depends on your unwinding and private review of your inventory of personal memories while sitting in meditation. Such unplanned memory events recur throughout your practice until you successfully integrate each presented memory. Next time, it is usually a different memory. However, beginning meditators are surprised at the clarity and emotional impact of these memories, and these memories are most frequent when the practice first gains traction. Meditation is par excellence self-therapy, but definitely not for those who wish to avoid recalling unpleasant past experiences. If you get into a place that troubles you, you can always contact the people at the author's website.

Knox The subtitle here, “A Complete Meditation Guide,” understates this astonishing book's comprehensiveness and profundity by half. This is a 475 page long magnum opus that's exponentially more useful than all of the previous guides to meditation I've read (and I've read plenty, having been involved in Buddhist study and practice since the early 1970's).For a newcomer to meditation this book is the best possible introduction as well as a lifelong companion. For someone with an established practice, be it in the Theravadin, Tibetan or Zen tradition (or for that matter secular mindfulness or non-Buddhist contemplative approaches) The MInd Illuminated is a treasure trove of encouragement and clarification of key points in practice that no other book I'm aware of addresses. It comes as close as any book possibly can to having not just a teacher but a living meditation master with personal experience of every step of the path into your home. While grounded in decades of obviously very serious and intensive practice and study of Buddhism this book uses the absolute minimum number of foreign words and defines them precisely. Someone with a purely secular interest in meditation will have no problem with the content, while devoted adherents of particular contemplative paths will feel supported. The tone throughout is kind, warm, clear and encouraging.Anyone who's practiced meditation for years knows that motivation for practice often waxes and wanes, and that it's all-too-easy to run into dead ends that seem impossible to overcome, to stagnate in one's practice, or to stop sitting altogether out of frustration or fear. Culadasa anticipates all of this, starting with a chapter titled “Establishing a Practice” that in and of itself is worth the price of the book, and following up with dozens of pith instructions that seem to address even the subtlest mistakes in practice, obviously born from a combination of deep realization and extensive experience coaching meditators ranging from beginner to very advanced. My only regret about this book is that it wasn't published decades ago!

By Cliff Wallshein After 40 years of meditation practice I could only wonder why I wasn’t taught how to correctly meditate by any of the Zen, Tibetan or Insight teachers that I have studied with. By correct I don’t want to imply that they were doing ”it” wrong, just that I was never offered a clear detailed method where one could monitor what stage meditation they were in and how to adjust their practice accordingly to consistently progress on the contemplative path.Culadasa and Matthew Immergut have distilled from the earliest Buddhist teachings and later commentaries by Asanga the actual techniques that the Buddha taught and have proven for 2,500 years to create the optimal conditions for awakening. This is the definitive book on meditation; it covers the how to and how come of meditation practice. The authors back ground in neuroscience and psychology translates into a method that is both pragmatic and scientific, that is it works, is verifiable and repeatable. The illuminated mind should be considered to the bible on mediation and a significant milestone in understanding the meditative mind.

Outstanding Debut Novel By Varina Denman: Jaded Reads Like A Movie In Your Head By Joseph Courtemanche [Full disclosure: I received a pre-publication copy of this work compliments of the author for review/endorsement purposes.]Varina Denman has an incredible debut novel with Jaded. I was expecting another pleasant Christian love story with some wit and dry humor thrown in, nothing too heavy. I was wrong. This book has such evocative writing that I kept seeing the movie in my head as I read through it this week. Not only did it read like watching a movie, but it was a really good movie. One I would be proud to take my God Daughter to see on a Saturday, and my beloved wife on Sunday. Mom will have to wait for the Monday showing.Set in a small (suffocatingly so in my worldview) Texas town it combines elements of To Kill a Mocking Bird and Cape Fear. I don't know if Varina meant to do that, but I loved the fact that I made the connection: it meant that the story elements were strong enough to bring those very deep emotional links right out in front. When you're compared to iconic authors right out of the chute, you've got the mojo.Characters in this novel are crisply drawn. They are not the stereotypical stuff of romance books. As a matter of fact, while this book started out as a Christian Romance novel, it would be a huge error to place it in that category alone. It's a brilliant novel that is enjoyable reading for all adults. I prefer action-thrillers, but Denman kept me hooked enough that I'd carve out time after work to read each evening. Good stuff. Pacing, plot, and some twists were all excellent and kept me motoring right along. The only downfall of the book is that she writes so well in scenes with food that I had to stop and snack - repeatedly. So far the must have list this week includes chicken fried steak, hot dogs, cotton candy, burgers, and hot chocolate. Thanks a lot for the weight gain!Part of a series of novels, it's set the hook deeply enough that I will buy her future works without reservation. She's really set the bar for debut authors with this one.

This book is a reminder of the damage that can be caused when Christians forget one of the main truths about all of us, "we have all sinned and fall short of the glory of God." Romans 3:23.This book takes a hard look at what happens when a small group of people makes the decision for administering discipline in the church and the consequences that can unfold because of it. Varina does this without being preachy but shows how devastating a harsh decision can be to members of the church. She also touches on the subject of judging someone without knowing all of the facts and she does it by expertly working it into the story line. She is then able to bring the story full circle to show how redeeming love and forgiveness can be. Varina really took her time developing her characters and I really wanted to see what else she had in store for them so I was very happy to see a preview of her sequel novel "Justified" at the end of the book, I can't wait to see where she takes them next and hopefully she'll answer a few lingering questions like, what happened to Clyde Felton's baby?I was given this book for review in an Ebook format from Netgalley. The publisher of this book is David C Cook.

Ruthie’s walk has never been easy. She has lived under the pallor of the town’s judgment for most of her life. She finds it easier to “hide” in the shadows, than to “live” in the light. Her experiences with “God’s Judgment”, rather than His Grace, cause her to be skeptical of those that espouse belief in the God of the church. Until one day, when her world is turned upside down with the arrival of a new family in town. Can she trust these new comers? Can she trust her feelings around them? Can she trust the God they love and serve? Varina Denman weaves this wonderful tale of a hidden dream and desire to be accepted by the town she has called home, all of her life. She brings the readers into the mind and feelings of Ruthie, a young woman, that has been rejected by the congregation of her childhood church and friends. A rejection caused by a supposed sin that was not of her doing. Through the eyes, ears and other senses of Ruthie, Varina brings not only the sights, but sounds and smells of Trapp, Texas alive. She spins a story that will keep the reader enthralled and engaged. As I read, Jaded, I had the great pleasure of walking the streets of the small Texas town. Once I had entered Trapp, I had no desire to leave. The next time you are searching for an escape from your daily grind, pick up a copy of Jaded and travel to Trapp, Texas. I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

It's 1666 and the Great Fire has just decimated an already plague-ridden London. Lady's maid Lucy Campion, along with pretty much everyone else left standing, is doing her part to help the city clean up and recover. But their efforts come to a standstill when a couple of local boys stumble across a dead body that should have been burned up in the fire but miraculously remained intact―the body of a man who died not from the plague or the fire, but from the knife plunged into his chest.

Searching for a purpose now that there's no lady in the magistrate's household for her to wait on, Lucy has apprenticed herself to a printmaker. But she can't help but use her free time to help the local constable, and she quickly finds herself embroiled in the murder investigation. It will take all of her wits and charm, not to mention a strong stomach and a will of steel, if Lucy hopes to make it through alive herself.

With From the Charred Remains, Susanna Calkins delivers another atmospheric historical mystery that will enchant readers with its feisty heroine and richly detailed depiction of life in Restoration England.

A fast-paced fun sequel By Laurel I enjoyed this author/historian's second effort featuring Lucy Campion, a former chambermaid who is making her way in the chaotic world of London after the Plague and Great Fire. Calkins is skilled at integrating the social history of the period (assigning blame for the Fire, the breakdown of social classes, attitudes toward foreigners) into an intriguing murder mystery. I especially enjoyed the use of puzzles in the solution of the crime. It isn't necessary to have read the first book in this series, as Calkins does a nice job of bringing the reader up to date with Lucy's life. Fans of Anne Perry, Tasha Alexander and Sam Thomas should enjoy this.

By jim The puzzle at the heart of "From the Charred Remains" was fascinating, as were the historical details of this time period. I hadn't realized that this was a time of such upheaval due in large part to the fire of London. I felt that, in addition to enjoying a great mystery with fun puzzle, I learned a bit about the time period--especially as it relates to the lives of normal, everyday people in the 1660s. I also appreciated the inclusion of a map this time!

The characters involved were not, except for Francis Clifford, who didn’t make an appearance until near the end. I thought the murders were somewhat convoluted and a bit over the top, especially all the things involving Francis’ parents, his mother in particular. Actually I think too much was going on and there were too many characters overall. There’s confusion for some time about who the murdered man in the barrel is. I just didn’t like any of the characters that that murder introduced- Rhonda Water and Darius. There was something I found strange about them and I felt like they didn’t fit into the story very well. That’s when I started to get bored. A barmaid gets killed too. Revelations about a woman, Amelie, who had died before this story began come to light and we get introduced to her nutty father and Francis, her ex-lover. I don’t like her father at all. I do like Francis. Too bad he wasn’t in the story earlier.Like with the first book in this series, this one too wasn’t very interesting when it could have and should have been. All the elements of a good mystery were there- the narrative just stunk.I received this from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. pass on this one!!! By Sarah L. Gruwell I think I gave this book a fair shake at 31% completed before dropping it like a hot potato. It, unfortunately, has all the problems of book one and even slides down another notch by killing one of the nicer points of that same book. So here ya go on why I dropped this one…The one bright point in this whole debacle of a book is the author still takes her time in the descriptions and beauty of 1920s rural England. The estate of Cavendon is beautifully described, and the fashions of the era are also lovingly brought to life. I could see everything in my mind’s eye, no problem.Sadly, everything else in this book that I was exposed to sucks. The characterizations…. Oy vey! Just like in book one, everybody is two-dimensional (at best!) and stereotyped. There were no “Daphne” and “Hugo” equivalents in this book to save this side. Everyone was either super beautiful, courageous, loyal, and true to the family OR you were evil, ugly, and an egg-sucking traitor.Even just having a dissenting opinion was enough to label you a traitor to the family and enough to get the cold shoulder from everyone. The individuals with this dissenting opinion was villainized and ostracized as soon as those opinions were voiced. Talk about “family loyalty”… I mean if you can’t have a different opinion and still feel loved with family members, than who can you with??Then there’s the story itself. We’re right back to the inane melodramas of the first two thirds of book one, only without the powerful events like Daphne’s “devastating” event. The biggest plot points by the time I quit was petty theft and marrying outside your class. Maybe in another work, these might have been enough to carry the story, but not with this work or author.I’m sorry to say that these two works were my introduction to the author. Sad to say, they don’t shine a good light on her as a writer. Maybe she was just in slump when these works oozed out of her pen, but don’t start with them if you haven’t read the author before. Horribly flat characterizations, inane plot points, and just bad writing bog this work down, like book one. Pass on this one.Note: Book received for free from publisher in exchange for an honest review. (Again, very honest, was I!!)

Barbara Taylor Bradford has a wonderful way with her writing, it draws you in, totally involving you. This story was a great mix of strong women and two families living and working together over the generations. The loyalty of both families to each other, liege and noble, servant and master goes beyond the normal bounds. I was pleased with how this story played out for each of the characters and the surprises that popped up along the way. I very much look forward to continuing their stories in the next books.Thank you for this wonderful read.

Redeems Itself in the End By Cynthia Jacox This being my first opportunity to read a novel by the celebrated author Barbara Taylor Bradford, I had high expectations for an engaging read. I was disappointed to find the first 300 pages to be extremely shallow in plot despite a well-developed, extensive cast of characters. The novel portrays the lives of a wealthy aristocratic English family as ones of almost fairy-tale perfection and invincibility. It is only in the last quarter that the novel redeems itself with elements of murder, mayhem, and misfortune. As this is my first exposure to Bradford's offerings, I have no idea whether this is a typical formula for her works. I couldn't help picture the novel as a script for an episode for Downton Abbey, which would work well for a one-hour TV program, but was a bit tedious in the form of a 450 page novel.

The magnum opus from Alejandro Jodorowsky—director of The Holy Mountain, star of Jodorowsky’s Dune, spiritual guru behind Psychomagic and The Way of Tarot, innovator behind classic comics The Incal and Metabarons, and legend of Latin American literature. There has never been an artist like the polymathic Chilean director, author, and mystic Alejandro Jodorowsky. For eight decades, he has blazed new trails across a dazzling variety of creative fields. While his psychedelic, visionary films have been celebrated by the likes of John Lennon, Marina Abramovic, and Kanye West, his novels—praised throughout Latin America in the same breath as those of Gabriel García Márquez—have remained largely unknown in the English-speaking world. Until now. Where the Bird Sings Best tells the fantastic story of the Jodorowskys’ emigration from Ukraine to Chile amidst the political and cultural upheavals of the 19th and 20th centuries. Like One Hundred Years of Solitude, Jodorowsky’s book transforms family history into heroic legend: incestuous beekeepers hide their crime with a living cloak of bees, a czar fakes his own death to live as a hermit amongst the animals, a devout grandfather confides only in the ghost of a wise rabbi, a transgender ballerina with a voracious sexual appetite holds a would-be saint in thrall. Kaleidoscopic, exhilarating, and erotic, Where the Bird Sings Best expands the classic immigration story to mythic proportions.

Where the Bird Sings Best, by Alejandro Jodorowsky

Review "Jodorowsky is today’s true Renaissance man—a master of many mediums that all point directly towards a towering and imaginative vision replete with profound insights into the real by way of the surreal. The stories told in Where the Bird Sings Best contain deep moral lessons, giving his mythic immigration story the feel of a modern day Sefer-ha-Aggadah—the classic collection of Jewish folktales. This long-awaited and brilliantly evocative translation is a must read—frightening, hilarious, outrageous, touching, and (as is always with Jodorowsky’s work) filled with a deep core of mystic truth." (John Zorn)“No one alive today, anywhere, has been able to demonstrate the sheer possibilities of artistic invention — and in so many disciplines — as powerfully as Alejandro Jodorowsky.… Where the Bird Sings Best... is his magnum opus, a fantastical something that in many ways mirrors the author himself: It is brilliant, mad, unpredictable.” (NPR Books)“Wildly inventive.… Jodorowsky’s masterpiece.... As the drama unfolds, the reader’s response veers from incredulity to awe, from doubt to delight. The momentum holds for the length of the novel as a cavalcade of outsized characters careen across the page in a frenzy that seems for once an adequate and just representation of the living fury that is history.” (The Los Angeles Review of Books)“Sober, dressed, and with all the lights on, I ripped through Where the Bird Sings Best — the first of Jodorowsky’s many novels to appear in English translation — in just a few enraptured days. The trick is to eschew caricature and give yourself over to the experience, at which point the wondrous strange takes over. The mind — and, god help me, the spirit — finds itself traveling in realms it could not have otherwise explored, or even dreamed exist.…Where the Bird Sings Best is electrifying.” (Barnes & Noble Review)“This epic family saga, reminiscent of Gabriel Garcia Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude in structure and breadth, reads at a breakneck pace. Though ostensibly a novelization of the author's own family history, it is a raucous carnival of the surreal, mystical, and grotesque....It weaves together Jewish philosophy, passion, humor, Tarot, ballet, circuses, natural disasters, spectacular suicides, lion tamers, knife throwers, Catholic devotion, farmers, betrayals, prostitutes, leftist politics, political violence, and the ghost of a wise rabbi who follows the family from the Old World to the New.” (Publishers Weekly)“A sweeping tale of personal, philosophical, and political struggles. It’s an immigrant’s story of Fellini-esque proportions….For the self-proclaimed atheist mystic, the sacraments are memory, dreams, family, wisdom, the grotesque, and the reinvention of the self.” (Flavorwire)“Alejandro Jodorowsky [is] a superb novelist. Where the Bird Sings Best [is a] gloriously readable, fantastical autobiographical novel…. [A] deliciously far-fetched, multigenerational saga.... One outrageous set piece follows another with an exhilarating density of imagination as Jodorowsky juggles the tale within tale with Arabian Nights agility.… Exuberant, unrelentingly creative in its folkloric style of heightened reality... he expertly harnesses boldly surreal images to capture the gorgeous, brutal essence of life.” (Shelf Awareness (Nick’s Picks))“Each paragraph pulsates, threatens to burst from its burgeoning body of details. Jodorowsky relieves pressure as necessary. But time after time, he proceeds to build up and dazzle all over again..... Each individual section is endowed with Jodorowksy’s full vitality.” (The Jewish Book Council)"Gorgeous prose, imagination and a kaleidoscopic narrative style make for an altogether satisfying reading experience, one that is both joyous and unnerving at the same time. Read this if you liked Jodorowsky's films, Gabriel García Márquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude, and Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian?." (Lit Reactor)

About the Author Alejandro Jodorowsky was born to Ukrainian Jewish immigrants in Tocopilla, Chile. At twenty-three, he left for Paris to pursue theater and the arts, and has lived there ever since. His classic films include The Holy Mountain, El Topo, Santa Sangre, and, most recently, The Dance of Reality. A prolific author, he has written novels, poetry, short stories, essays, and more than thirty successful comic books. www.restlessbooks.com

Like 100 Years of Solitude Meets Tom Waits—on Acid By Avidity Jones Huge, weird, joyous, raunchy, full of family legends and disturbingly compelling and surreal incest, Tarot and Jewish mysticism, lovers embalmed in honey and lion tamers more lion than tamer, this book is crazy and yet also completely engrossing and relatable. Even if you haven't seen Jodorowsky's films (but even better if you have), you're in for a treat. I won't describe the plot, because it's impossible to describe, but if maximalism and sexual freedom and really excellent and inventive writing are your bag, then I highly recommend Where the Bird Sings Best.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Magically delicious. By Donald Beattie Purportedly a memoir, this novel is a rewriting of a troubled family history—a kind of supernatural origin story, the prequel to Jodorowsky’s "The Dance of Reality" of last year. Just as that film endowed a cruel and inhuman father with a shred of humanity and a voiceless mother with an operatic set of pipes, this book lends fullness and complexity to ancestral figures who would otherwise be lost to the past. The book seethes with twisting stories on either side of the author’s family tree, the thrust angling toward the eventual union of Jodorowsky’s parents at the subtle prompting of his prenatal, disembodied spirit. Rather than plot, though, this story deals primarily with striking images (the author is, after all, a filmmaker and graphic novelist). All varieties of graphic and violent sex, “monkey men” and “turtle women,” martyred strikers’ blood writing out the notes to a revolutionary hymn, a Jewish ghetto in Europe flying to Jerusalem every night, performing fleas and lions, suicides in vats of honey—such pictures remain emblazoned in the reader’s mind long after she finishes the book (something, I should note, I did very quickly!). Given its South American setting and multigenerational aspect, it’s tempting to call this book magical realism, but on the other hand, given the author’s psychedelic, out-there films, it’s also tempting to call it straight-up surrealism.Jewish and Catholic iconography bump shoulders with the shamanistic mumbo jumbo to be expected from someone who has written scores of books on the Tarot, I Ching, and “psychomagic,” and this text seems to present the practical manifestations of spiritual tenets Jodorowsky has laid out elsewhere. While perhaps unsettling for some, the book has a strong—if difficult to identify—moral center. Highly recommended, and I can’t wait to see more literary from this fascinating figure in the near future.

Quite lewd considering the content of the book is overwhelmingly religious, existential and spiritual. Some really cool passages and paragraphs that offer a new perspective on the commonplace ideologies found in books like this. All together, very enjoyable, engaging and hard to put down. A nice easy read.

For New York Kings' first baseman Scott Harper, scoring women is easy. He's ready to get naked anytime, anywhere. But when a hacker leaks his nude selfies, he's unprepared for the scrutiny his full-frontals receive. Carrie McKenzie has a love-hate relationship with her body. No longer the fat chick guys can ignore, she wins the job as the Kings' clubhouse reporter. With her svelte new figure, she nabs an exclusive interview with Scott to get his take on the scandal. However, the two are already on a first-name basis after Scott came on to her in the hotel bar, and she woke up in his arms. The problem is that Scott doesn't do relationships and Carrie doesn't date jocks, yet the way they burn up the sheets is deserving of more than just a one-night stand. Scott shows Carrie that he has a sweet, caring side beneath all the swagger. But can she really trust her heart to the biggest player in the game?

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Great sports romance series. By Michelle@Book Briefs Perfect Game is the fourth book in the Adult sports romance series, Night Games. The series each focuses on a different player on the baseball team, the New York Kings. Perfect Game focuses on Scott, who is a notorious womanizer. At this point, I am thinking that practically all the New York Kings are. The books are each complete standalones, but I will warn you that this one picks up right in the middle of a scene so it feels like you are initially missing something, but you aren’t. That is just the way the book starts, but don’t worry, once you get past those first two scenes everything starts to make sense and you get backstory. As a side note Perfect Game and the whole series is really an adult sports romance series, but it straddles the line between New Adult and adult because of the age of a few of the characters. What I liked about Scott’s story was that it felt very natural. Scott doesn’t do commitment for his own reasons and while he stuck by that for a while he still couldn’t get Carrie out of his head, so they kept hanging out. The funny thing to me was that Scott still felt like he wasn’t committing when it was clear as day that he was. But anyway, the story is not without its ups and downs and roadblocks for the maybe happy pair. But throughout it all Carrie and Scott were a hoot and a half. I really loved their chemistry and their back and forth biting banter and bickering. They sure could keep each other on their toes. But they were sweet too. One of my favorite scenes was when Scott and Carrie were out at their first dinner and the waitress makes some kind of comment about Carrie getting a healthier dinner, and boy did she put her in her place. And Scott totally backed her up and then Carrie thanked him for having her back. I don’t know why but I just thought that moment was great.I love the winning formula that Collette West has with this series. The New York Kings are a great group of well developed (heh-heh) guys and each one of their stories is wonderful. I think Collette West really captures the world-wind universe of sports and sports players perfectly. This book is another home run in the series. (Sorry, I couldn’t resist.)*Disclaimer- I got a copy of this book for free in exchange for my honest review. I was not compensated for my thoughts.

Faltys As a fan of sports-themed romances I've quickly come to count on Ms. West's baseball series for its perfect balance of love and vividly depicted sports action. Her characters are relatable with journeys to HEA that are richly rewarding. Through each book each ball player has left me with a smile on my face, but from his very first appearance in this series I've been enamored of the sweet playboy with a heart of gold, Scott Harper, like no other. Perfect Game is his turn to step up to the plate and from start to finish it held me captivated.Scott has always been seen as the pretty boy of the team, a player afraid to commit, and on some level that's true. He's a sexy man who's had his fair share of women but he makes no excuses for his actions. He may think himself incapable of relationships but slowly but surely he and sports reporter Carrie start making a connection that surprises both of them. Readers though won't be surprised by the instant and combustible connection between the two of them. From witty banter to steamy sexual interludes their interactions crackle and put a smile on my face. Scott's a man with surprising depth. Far from just a pretty boy he's an amazing athlete seeking to break a record. Through everything he's always been there for his teammates to help them realize true love when it's staring them in the face, which made his journey to HEA all the more entertaining. He never let Carrie doubt his devotion and through every word and deed showed exactly how he felt about her which had me fall even more in love with him.Carrie was a likable and strong-willed heroine dealing with doubts familiar to most women. She too was judged for her looks and was often found lacking. Her rich family also tended to judge her but with Scott she was always made to feel important and cherished. Even as she stuck up for herself, she had Scott there to back her up which made them a formidable and entertaining pair. From start to finish this was an entertaining story with lots of witty and playful banter between Scott and Carrie that was teeming with sexual tension. Love caught both of them off-guard and their battle to keep falling deeper in love made for a fun journey to HEA. There was a nice balance between interactions in and out of the bedroom with each interlude full of sexual intensity. Ms. West also interspersed vividly depicted ball playing that made you feel part of the roaring crowd. Seeing old favorites amongst the players, along with new favorites, reminded me of why I adore this series and gives me even more excitement for the future. These boys of summer are compelling with very unique personalities, and with the next story supposedly about the VERY bad boy Drake, I anticipate this series becoming even more memorable. No matter what though, Scott will always be my favorite. His sweet, sexy, and playful nature puts a smile on my face even now! Those looking for an immensely romantic and fast-paced series of books will be drawn to these boys of summer and now's as good a time as any to jump on this bandwagon.

Being a HUGE baseball fan this series is right up my alley. Ms. West has an amazing way to pull you into the story going into perfect baseball details. Perfect Game is by far the best read in the series. So many elements brought this one together. Scott and Carrie, Alex and Bobby, Bobby's story alone is heartbreaking and lets not forget all the drama surrounding the Kings.Scott Harper has to be one of my favorites. He is the true meaning of a bad boy. He's a mega star on the field and a ladies man in the bedroom. His being gorgeous doesn't hurt to draw all the ladies to him. When someone hacks his phone posting all his private naked photos of both him and all his celebrity hook ups. The scandal brings the Kings and Scott under unneeded stress."Sorry, sweetheart, but you're not gonna change me. It's no secret that I'm a love-'em-and-leave-'em kinda guy. It's just how I operate."Carrie McKenzie is the clubhouse reporter for the Kings. Carrie's not blind to how good looking Scott really is and after he showers a teammate with Gatorade during a post game interview getting Carrie soaked in the process, Carrie falls to his charming ways. After their night together will there be a repeat? Can she give it all up and tame the bad boy? Can he turn into a one woman man for her? This is one of those reads I don't ever want to end. I love Bobby's story and hope we get to see more of him in future books. March was a great release time on this one. I happened to be reading this while watching Grapefruit league games making this a perfect companion seeing as Perfect Game starts during the Kings Spring training.*Wicked Reads Review Team*

By Melissa Alec is well aware he lives in a weak pack, so it’s not too surprising when they are attacked and lose, badly. The survivors are sold to slavers, including Alec who’s an omega, the lowest wolf on the rung. Saved by Alpha Chris and his soldiers the rescued wolves are integrated into their new pack.Combining the new shifters into the pack is easy enough, getting them to contribute to their new home is becoming frustrating. Some are willing to work, the rest fall back into their bad habits. Raised to believe that an omega is arm candy and little more Alec doesn’t know how to do anything. In an effort to motivate the wolves Chris sends for doctors North and Michi, fox shifter brothers who are certified psychiatrists. Instant attraction is a silly ideal, yet the moment Michi is introduced to Alec he knows it’s unethical to treat the wolf, let alone sleep with him. He’s always lived in the shadow of his more proper brother, feeling less than North. Meeting Alec soothes Michi in ways he never expected. Finding purpose and falling in love is a tall order for the gentle omega but with Michi by his side anything is possible for both of them.A blossoming life and love is embraced. The Wayne County Wolves are back in Alec’s Moon, their thirteenth enjoyable tale. Alec and Michi are lonely, likeable shifters who never had a chance to reach their potential alone. Together they can. In Alec’s Moon the mates are given a charming set up to succeed. An entertaining read with heat and humor. This book was reviewed by Lisa for Joyfully Reviewed (JR), and was provided by the publisher/author at no cost to JR for the purpose of being reviewed.
